I've searched the net quite a bit, but was only able to find one source for a rebuilt AX4N (actually he sold them but didn't do the rebuild work) and that was in Washington State. Total for parts and shipping came to $1545. I'm on the east coast of FL and I have the option of getting a rebuild AND reinstall on my current unit with all new parts for $2870 with a 2 yr., $24k mile warranty from a long time local automatic tranny guy. Yes, I already contacted Doug Lewis.

I'm not yet at the point in my life where I can just let this car go.

Any info would be appreciated!

You should be able to get discount pricing on a Ford reman with a 3yr/75k mile warranty. Probably about $1800 plus R&R labor ($500-$800). Warranty is good at any FLM dealer in the country.

I appreciate the response, but I am very leary about going to a FLM dealer for anything these days, much less something like a tranny rebuild. The last time I went to a dealer (90k service) they took my K&N out and put in a Motorcraft. They left a vacuum line unattached in the past and even took the car through their carwash with the radio on (i.e. with the antenna sticking up, bending it 90 degress, which they fixed, of course). Dealers around here were quoting $3k or better after labor and tax. If I were up there in NE, I'd hunt down that legend of a mechanic that drives (or used to drive) the Stormtrooper, and see what he could do for me. =)

Just buy the tranny from Ford and have someone else install it. Places like http://www.fastpartsnetwork.com can get you a better price than a dealer.

Ford doesn't rebuild the trannys, they contract them out. Their contractors are required to dyno test all their rebuilds an 99% of tranny rebuilders don't have a dyno, it's a "cross your fingers and hope it works" deal. I've never had a Ford reman tranny come back in for a problem.

SInce FPN now lists the tranny at over $2200 (plus core) the $3k dealer price isn't great but after part mark up and labor, it's close. You need to see how much core shipping (maybe both ways) adds to the cost and see if you can source an oem rebuild locally. Or go with your local rebuilder guy. Or just go up to GA and have Doug put everything together.
