After I pulled the air box and saw it, I pulled it out from inside the wheel well.
This was always the first mods on my mustangs and id assume it'd be worth atleast a little power here.

A diy cold air is in the works, I got a 3in clamp on filter already

Its louder. Was one of the first on the Cougar also. Its free so its worth a try.

No extra power, just extra noise. To me at least, that's a good thing. I love the sound of the engine.

Also, the air intake is already a cold air, it sucks fresh air in from the fender. If you want to do your own, go for it. Just realize that it's not going to add any power, and if you have the filter in the engine bay, you may actually lose power (warm air intake).

I did the cone removal last week along with a K & N airfilter replacement. I think it may run a little better but it sure sounds good at around 3,800+ rpm's.

i finally got around to doing this and i must admit because i didn't want all the noise that flipping the air breather did on the old 70's carbed cars. in my opinon it improves throttle response thoughout the rpm range and isn't much louder at WOT with no difference when cruising. i would say it's a no brainer that going from the 2 1/4" air horn restriction to a 4" hole is bound to help. i should have dont it a long time ago. as firebat said with a DIY CAI expect to loose power.....our cars alrdy have a stock CAI setup

as far as a silencer goes i think someone claimed a while back it frees maaaaaaayb 1-2 hp........honestly 1-2 IMHO isnt enuf to be provable.....so really just expect a little louder intake noise

Agreed, there really is no power, but plenty of noise, remove silencer cone drop in a K & N panel filter, and you will def hear the seconderies open up

K&N won't gain you any horsepower either, just louder intake. Some people also think it does a worse job of filtering, but I'm not sold on that. I haven't heard of anyone having problems with dust being let through a K&N.

Though there have been plenty of problems from the oil fouling up the MAF sensor.

I have had a K&N for over 100k and I am still running the MAF that came with the car and no problems with it. If you clean the filter and use too much oil when reoiling it then I can see a potential problem.

I dumped the K and N panel filter 2 yeara ago after it fouled my MAF twice. It ran fine for months and then fouled up; same again, and no cleaning / oiling of it during this time. Luckily I was within a few miles of home both times. I have owned K & N for decades in other cars and not had any problems.

the K&N isn't a issue unless you live in a dusty environment. just ask tom how the intake in his buggy looked after playing in the dunes for a season. I only run a K&N on my turbo car because it can get soaking wet and survive. I can't say anything good about its ability to filter air since I have a few chips in my turbo compressor wheel. The car has NEVER been run without a filter so how would anything get past right? probably because I don't properly oil/clean it but On a non boosted SHO I recommend keeping a paper filter with the stock intake. There is no power to be had there. you can open up the intake as much as you want but you are still sucking air through that tiny MAF, and if you upgraded the mad already you are sucking air through the 1 3/4" tubing that is the SHO intake. Just remember that only one side of the intake gets to suck at a time so is that 3" intake really going to help?

Its all about the sound, and this engine sounds fantastic rip that silencer out, get a set of BBB's yank the intake horns out and enjoy the SHO roar!

i've been running K&N filters for 24 years without any problems. if you're fouling your MAF you need to clean your filter, re-oil sparingly, get some maf cleaner and security torx bits so you can remove it..
don't let anybody tell you that removing the silencer cone doesn't make power. try it for yourself and be your own judge. if it doesn't make you any more noticeable power (smoother throttle response and more eager acceleration) there must be something else wrong with your car. i know i have clogged cats that fire off the CEL O2 sensor codes every time i stomp it and i can still feel the difference. they last forever. my 1985 corvette which i bought new and has been in storage since 1989 with 26,000 miles starts up first crank thanks to my battery tender and Stabil. it is old enough for antique tags and i plan on driving it again next year. it still has the original gatorbacks and that is becoming an oddball tire size so i am procrastinating on it's replacement.
