I have a 94 MTX it has been having a power loss problem lately. I thought it was the fuel filter so I replaced that it was at about 30 %. Anyway the car will surge when you Punch it. (Most noticeable in 1st and 2nd gear.) So I unplugged the Maf to see what happen and the car runs great under RPM when it is unplugged But yet still runs a sketchy when at idle. The car has new Plugs, wires, o2 sensors, maf, I aslo took off the Tb and cleaned that and the IAC. So my main question here is why does it run like it should power wise when the MAF is unplugged?]

it should stall out when you MAF is unplugged, you may want to start by cleaning it, but see what others say. BTW, do not use PB or WD40 on you MAF sensor.

Also, can you give a little better definition of surge? does it idle steady with the MAF plugged in?

Might wanna check the wiring for the MAF too. It could just be a bad connection. I think I've run into problems with the plug before...

please tell me this surge does not just occur at 4k.

is the surge more of a bucking? The clip on the bottom of my MAF connector broke off so sometimes it would wiggle loose. It would cause the car to buck intermittently as a result.

If this is what you are experiencing, I agree with frosho, check the wires and connectors well.

I just got home from work on my day off and checked the thread. Well one of the tabs on the bottom of the MAF connector is broke off....so this must be the problem. What did you do to fix the problem?

my car only has one clip in the MAF not 2, one was broken off, i dont have a problem with mine, but who knows. maybe try some dielectric grease for a better connection? it could be a multiple of things and could you describe the surge a little better?

remove the MAF sensor from the aluminum housing using the security torx bits and spray the filaments with MAF specific cleaner.

New does not mean clean.
