looking at buying 2010 SHO TAURUS

my grandfather is retired ford worker and will get me on a or z plan i forget which one.

but i had a few questions


i want this car to be a nice performance car, nothing crazy.

just a little umf..

im all about keeping cars with original parts and keep classics classics.. but i definitely wanna see some performance add-ons if possible.

so i was reading that there is a sport performance package you can get when you purchase your car, what exactly does that entail?

second, what are additonal upgrades that can be made to increase HP?

if any at all?

i know the newer cars have electronic intakes so it be pointless to go there.

im not really into flash stuff like skirts, spoilers, scoops, and all that. i just want the performance there.

any ideas?

Car officially comes out today, so no performance upgrades are available yet. Ecoboost will be a universal powerplant so should be some coming before long. Limits to upping boost are likely in oerder to preserve the trans, around 415 hp or so is rumored. WIll ask the Ford people at the factory later today and get some input.

Yes welcome! And the Rapid Spec (track pac) package is for sure worth it. THe only problem is that a few of the options are not available with the 20" wheels that come with the track pac, namely the adaptive cruise control and blind spot radar.

Well that's partially correct. The adaptive cruise and BLIS can be had with the 20" wheels as that's how the loaded ones come, but you cannot get it with the track pak for reaseons unkown to me.

I am one of the few that has actually driven both the regular SHO and the Performance package SHO.

with the Performance Package you get better brake pads, stiffer springs/bushings, bigger rear sway bar (don't think the front is different), ability to turn off the stability control instead of just reduce it, and what most people want, a deeper 3.17 gear instead of a 2.77.

Now knowing that, you need to ask, do you plan on doing a LOT of track days, and drag racing/autocrossing?

Second: Do you prize overall ride quality (not jaring, but smooth and controlled) over overall handling?

I can feel a for sure difference between the two packages, and the regular package suits my midwest busted up road mindset most. The gear is worth a tenth maybe in the 1/4 mile, and something in the first 60', but make no mistake, the standard SHO is plenty fast.

For $1200, I can install my own better brake pads, or wait for the inevitable better brake upgrade from the aftermarket. Handling of the regular version is superb, with one of the best compromises between ultimate handling and reasonable comfort I have driven. And remember, till there is a true full active suspension with real time response to road conditions, ALL cars have a suspension/handling compromise.

Finally, at the Job 1 intro, Steve Ling said that he was working on getting the top option packages released for use with the performance package. So if you must have that and also want adaptive radar etc, you may be able to get it in a month or so. Check with your dealer on a regular basis.

As he also strongly hinted at the SHO Convention banquet. Where the PP and non-PP cars are different mechanically in a few ways, I'm sure it's a matter of just getting these cars out quickly and then integrating packages later.

I'll just have to wait a while...

I second that Don 100%. After driving the new SHOs around for nearly a week, I enjoyed the extra amenities the non-track package came with. Another thing, why in the world would anyone want to take a brand new 2010 car to the drag strip/track for and take the chance of tearing it up?!? I for one would not. What kind of a point does someone wanna prove? Unless your new SHO is hitting 12s, why even bother? Perhaps it's just me and others may want to. Thats cool and I respect that. I'm all for the drag strip, in my other ride though. Not a new SHO. All the younger guys can have at the performance package all they want. That just leaves us "other" guys the decked out versions on the lots. :thankyou:

I might wait the first 500-1000 miles, depending on how long I can hold out, but then it would def be at the strip. It's a performace car and I wanna see/feel first hand the performace it has, as well as too see what kind of times I could get out of it. It's also a lot safer than doing it on the road.

No, that is NOT how you are supposed to break them in. Of course everyone is different. Talk to an engine builder and see what they say. Take for instance, you go buy this new 2010 SHO and damage the motor. There is a warranty from the factory. They should take care of it, no questions asked...you hope. But i cannot see how dogging the motor is going to be good for it in the long run. I've built some 4.6/5.4 motors and have never "broke" them in like that. And I'm not going to start now, with those or the SHO motors. Just my .02 worth. Let's see what others have to say as I'm curious too on this though.
