Well I was up in Lubbock Tx refereeing a NCAA sanctioned tournament, and on the drive back, the SHO started acting funny. She seemed to hesitate a bit after stops and have trouble "finding" overdrive after I got up to speed. Thought maybe it was a miss or something so I drove on (I still have my CE light coming on from the DPFE sensor being bad). I reached about halfway in the trip and all of a sudden the car wound out big time like the tranny dropped out. I got off the gas, and let it find the gear again and babied her home. On the way I was attempting to make a pass around a semi, and lost OD again. I took her home and immediately smelled the tranny fluid and it had a burned smell to it. These are the first symptoms I have noticed with the tranny and I never thought after adding an auxiliary Hayden that I would have cooling problems again. OH WELL. Being that this has JUST STARTED, will a quick flush and switch to Redline save the tranny?
Or is it already screwed for the 4TH TIME! Please tell me I can save it still. I don't feel like taking her back to Dallas again for the 3rd time this year. UGH! shoot

Can you say MTX? Sure, I knew ya could!

I understand this is the same tranny the slo uses. If the anemic vulcan can chew up and spit out one of those POS slushboxes in 60K, how long do you expect it to last behind the yamahammer? Eject dude, eject!!!! Sell it to a little old lady who will drive it down hill only to church on sunday, that way it might stand a chance for a while.

Jeremy you've got to be kidding me! You're current run of luck has got to change... I'd buy a lottery ticket or something because you can only get the shaft so many times. I'd call up the tranny shop & see if they can't pick the car up or something... these axode's are crappy but not that bad! Keep your chin up & keep us posted! wink

Thats pretty bad.. Either the install was done incorrectly, or you are REALLY beating the crap out of that transmission...

Geez Jeremy, I hope it's not as serious as you thought.

I can't imagine that the tranny would go that many times in that short amount of miles, no matter how you drive.

Best of luck!

I just suggested this in another thread, but I don't know if it relates to your problem. It's worth a look, though.

http://www.shotimes.com/SHO3ATX4thgear.html

Other than that, is it JUST OD, and not any other gears? I can't believe you'd be burning or boiling ATF like that when you have a big-A$$ Hayden on there. Something is definitely not right. What color was the fluid, by the way? Did it also look burnt?

Oh, and what year ATX did they use to rebuild your tranny with this last time (the remanned one)?

Sorry to her that about your tranny. I hope everything goes well with it.
My tranny pan has AXOD SHO stamped on it. Does that make a difference?
Your 95 deffinatly doesn't have a AXOD as posted its an AX4S. Same as 94 and they have the same pan with AXOD stamped on it. Its the same case just some different internal mods and guts.

geeezz, you guys are testy. Am I a big help? maybe not, but I think my advice is better than recommending you dump further cash into this money pit. I'm not trying to flame here, well, maybe a little, I feel for you jeremy, I really do, but, you've got to admit, ford autotransaxles are almost as bad as chryslers. I know, I have an 89 slo wagon that's been slippin and sliding since I bought it 90K miles ago. Amazingly, it still works, but, only because I nurse it along.

Seriously though, what does the shop that sold/rebuilt this thing have to say? They must have some sort of warranty on it.

If they don't want to work with you, there ought to be some way you can go after them. Maybe some gov agency or just a really nasty lawyer. You might even call some local TV consumer advocate type dude. I honestly think you're beyond how can I fix this POS tranny. All you can do is try to get the shop that's screwed you to do what's right. Maybe they could do an mtx swap for you? Seems like a better solution from an ethical point of view than "get in running and dump it on another poor sap".

Good luck, man, looks like you'll need it.

You may have a shift solenoid that's burned out or maybe the lock up clutch isn't working. It still won't be cheap but it's better than another rebuild.

The 1993 is an AXOD-E. I have 2 93's with the ATX and i just rebuilt them both myself within the past month. What has probably happened to you is the same thing that was wrong with one of mine that my daughter drives. The trans. was rebuilt just before we bought it and it never felt right to me, it got to the point about 10k later i finally had to pull it and rebuild it. Well when i tore it down i could not believe what i found. They had put a valve body on it from a regular Taurus, The spring for the low/intermediate band was not the right one..they left the "test" spring in there that is used for checking the band clearance. The AXOD-E in the SHO uses 5 friction plates in the direct and intermediate clutch packs instead of the 4 in each the regular Taurus uses, well they did not have enough frictions or they just did not know what they were doing so they put 3 frictions in the direct pack and 4 in the intermediate!! They made up the space by putting in a couple of extra steels!!
These things combined with some other stuff is why it was messed up.
I went thru it and installed the correct valve body with a Trans-Go shift kit and did the **** mods and put all the updated solonoids and forward piston in it and synthetic fluid. It will now hold up to anything i can put to it!!
Where are you located? If you are in the Georgia area i do rebuild these and they will be strong and i do it for alot cheeper than you might pay else where, you can even watch what i do to it also, i dont feel like some of the "SHO gods" that it is a big secret..

Well the shop I took it to in Dallas has experience working with SHO trannies and got the list of upgrades from another tranny shop on what the "beefs" were to change the 93 tranny and make it stronger. I dunno. The car is still under 10k/12 month warranty, but I will be out the car, the drive to Dallas, (5hrs) and he won't want to see me anytime soon. But like I said the tranny fluid did smell burned a bit after it did that, and I am going to flush this week with Redline, cross my fingers, and hope there was no internal damage. Right now, I am willing to drive anywhere after this warranty runs out from this shop. I bet he would be willing to call you for tip/help for an appropriate fee. It would be cheaper than seeing me again after 3 months. I'll let you guys know.

Jeremy,

I am sorry to hear about your transmission troubles, but I think that the flush with Redline will be putting good money after bad. The expensive sythetic fluid will not repair burned bands. If you are going to flush it, I would use regular ATF first and see if it makes any difference. Have we taken "The Transmission Shop" off the list of recommended shops yet?

Already done my friend, the only reason my sho will go there is because it is still under warranty. After that.....NEVER AGAIN! BTW, I took a good look at the tranny fluid and it still appears to have the red apprearance to it, it just smells burned really bad. and there is a noticalbe smell from the transmission housing. I will take your advice Scott and just flush it with the regular stuff first, instead of what happened last time.

The Transmission Shop, Garland, Tx..... shoot shoot shoot

Pete, not all "pos slushboxes" are the same. I know...my "fps slushbox" gets a daily dose of over 300 lb ft of torque to it and it holds up just fine.

Jeremy, give Doug a call @ FPS and have him send you one of his tranny's. If I can't break it with the power that my car is making, you should be fine with your car.
