I have a 95 ATX Sho that has suddenly started flashing the Check Engine light. The first time, I had been hot footing it up a mountain road, and when I got to the top and more casually drove down the other side, it would randomly flash. I pulled off and checked for problems and found none, I didn't do this after I restarted the car. The next day, I was trying to read the codes and stubmled about an cleared them...Darn. I then drove to a store and jumped on it to pass a semi. Once I let off and moved into the lane ahead of the truck, it came on steady. It stayed off after restarting the car. When I got home, I read the 176 code. That's the only one I get.

The only recent changes to the car are I had to replace the alternator and I actually put Mobile premium 91 octane in the car beforfe heading up the mountain.

I saw lots of these codes in various posts, but they all seemed to include stalling and other codes.

Where should I start ?

Note: Have have a melted rear O2 sensor plug on the car, but it has been this way a long time.

well, 176 is an O2 sensor code, so...

HEGO sensor circuit indicates lean. (Front Side).

That's what 176 means. Since it's just the one, and chances are good that the engine is not leaning out on just one bank, it sounds like you need a new front O2 sensor. The rear one is not far behind, I can guarantee you that.

Or... you might have an intake leak on the front side of the engine. Some unmetered air on the front bank would make the front O2 indicate lean. Maybe one of your front fuel injectors is weak?

reply to 176 problem

I too have a 176 problem along with a 543 code and KOEO 136 code. I had the top and bottom gaskets changed and now the mechanic says that the pressure in the engine is higher so oil leaks out of the seals now. I hosed down the engine and over soaked everything. Had a heck of a time drying it out and had about a dozen codes. I've got it down to 3 now but when it is hot the engine will not start right away and when I put the tester on it only sees 4 cylinders not 6. Could have I messed up the CPS? I tried to clean the O2 front sensor with electronic cleaner but that didn't work.
