Thinking about getting an SHO, but the few that are available in my area have the performance package added. Yes, I need to test drive, but am just wondering if their are any opinions on SHO with and without. I appreciate a sporty car with great pickup, but being that I also need to use this as a daily commuting car an hour each way, just wondering how bad the performance package affects ride quality when I want to be in relax mode instead of speed racer mode? 10 years ago I wouldn't care, but now at age 46, I'm looking for a mid-life crisis car that will balance my need for speed and comfort.

You probably really won't notice the difference. Ride quality shouldn't make too much of a difference, but the Michelins do ride better but don't grip as well Good Year tires when dry. Be prepared to get a better set of rubber though for the winter months as the GY's are terrible. Now get to test driving that thing!! :naughty: You won't be disappointed.

PP does not affect ride quality at all. You get better brake pads, improved steering, better wheels, 3.16 final drive.

The downsides are 1 less mpg, and no spare tire.

GET THE PERFORMANCE PACKAGE.

thanks for the feedback. The thing that worried me most was the stiffer springs and dampers really affecting ride quality on long trips. I had original been set on a mustang, but the back seats are completely unusable. Even my 17 year old told me to pass on the mustang after seeing them.

+1. I would have gotten it up here in Canada were it available....but alas.

I think you have to forgo the smart cruise if you opt for the PP -- ??????

in any case no big loss. for sure get the PP.

Dude, if you're going to swing for a new Taurus SHO GET THE PERFORMANCE PACKAGE! It's like buying a Formula one race car and putting Goodride tires on it, go the extra mile and get it..

Depending if price matters, but if you have a better deal out of the non PP, I think it is easy to make it sportier just by lowering it with H&R springs (350$), adding a tune (500$), putting a Cold air intake (300$) and a custom exhaust (800$), better brake pads (200$), better tires (650$). For a total invesment of about 3K$, you will have a kick ass car with no compromises other than not having the final ratio... I don't think you will miss it anyways. The final ratio is only good for the quarter mile. The 0-60 is not faster with the PP as it needs one extra shift and you don't have a spare tire... So all depends on the deal imo. That said, I would probably have bought a PP if it would have been available here in Canada too, but I am more than happy now with the non PP and now would buy a non PP if I had the choice... Finally, any choice you are going to make, you will be more than happy with this super car as we all are! Enjoy and let us now what you end up choosing...

PP is pretty smooth for my 60+mile daily commute. As far as the fuel economy goes, I'm getting about 23 mpg on the display from probably 90% highway driving. The ride is quiet for me, even on these abusive Michigan roads.

Get the PP.

i like the radar cruise control more than the performance pack... times when you are so tired and traffic is going kinda slow is worth more than shaving off a 1/10th of a sec or 2 off the 1/4 mile

tires can always be changed down the road to stickier rubber and/or better wheels dropped in size

the brake pads can always be swapped to better brake pads which will definately out perform any OE ford product

Tough question, but I don't have the Performance Package but if I could have gotten it with the ACC I would have gotten it. I wanted the Adaptive Cruise Control more then the PP, but now I think I would have preferred the PP over the ACC, but you couldn't get both, so I went with the ACC. BTW, I'm not sure age has anything to do with it, I'm 59.

Agreed to all of it execpt that I wouldn't pay 1500$ for adaptive cruise control, especially that I would want to rely on it for my safety... Only as a backup...

Steve, the ACC only lists for $1195.00 in the states, and the collision warning works pretty darn nice if you aren't totally concentrating on the job of driving.

It's because I only use the cc when on highway with no or not a lot of traffic. Otherwise, when in traffic or in town, I prefer to drive and be concentrated and therefore not rely on a computer... That said, I appreciate the collision warining when I back up and the rear view camera on the navi system... 1195$ is still a good chunk of money, I prefer a CAI, HR springs, tinted windows and LMS tunes for the same price!!! lol

As someone who enjoys ramming his car into others on occasion I am here to say, collision warning has saved my bacon once or twice in a year of SHO ownership so I think it's great. As others have noted adaptive cruise allows for a new level of zoning out while driving but with it set to the near setting I agree it truly tests one composure to believe it will not rear end the car in front of you.

Hey guys... haven't posted here in a while or any board in a while for that matter...... I have plans to put a new SHO in my garage in the near future and have been lurking over the GEN 4 forum like white on rice. I test drove a few new SHOs and drove a non PP back to back with a PP car. I came away LOVING the PP car and I definitely felt a difference in the butt dyno :omgsho:. It could have been a combination of an aggressive throttle tip in and shorter final drive, but the PP car just felt that much more zippy and downright quick! I even managed to get a little wheel spin on a curvy slice of road with 4 guys in the car! :3gears: I liked everything about the PP, BUT, I drove it for a good stretch on the highway and maybe due to the tire ruts in the road... it just felt too bouncy. I almost felt like I needed to put on a bra cause there was a little bit of jiggling... A buddy of mine that was along for the ride said it felt pretty smooth... but this is coming from a guy with a lowered & tuned DSM, so I took his opinion with a grain of salt. For a short drive I think I could tolerate it, for a long road trip or a long commute, i'm not so sure. I would hope that maybe, just maybe with a little break in that it would drive a little smoother OR hopefully it was just the road. The standard SHO is great, smooth and still very quick and neither would be a bad choice. All in all, I still would like to get a PP SHO and want to go test driving again on one with some miles on it to see if it helps. I'm just holding off to see how well they hold up before getting one. Hopefully this helps and I'm sorry if I put you in limbo with me... Drive them both and see which one you like and can live with. Good luck!

I am glad I bought the fully loaded nonPP SHO. I absolutely want a spare, the Michelins wear better, I like the adaptive CC, its plenty fast and stops fine. I live in northern NY so I bought a set of winter tires/rims (~ $1,000). If you plan on doing any driving in the snow then that is a major consideration.

I took the PP - very happy and I'm 57 but I still drive like I'm 25.

Just get a spare tire, that's the only thing I've ever needed and the SHO's working on 60k miles now.

That's the only drawback (for me) with the PP. I'm used to having a regular or donut spare and would not be comfortable without one of them.
If I had the PP I would quickly get a donut to carry along.

I have the non-PP and drive it daily without the spare... Less weight, more rrom in the trunk... But if I were to drive it for a longer ride, I would put it back in. Worst case in my daily drive, if I have a flat tire, I will use a towing and pay the 75$... Only happened to me once in almost 20 years of driving 20K miles per year...
