My stock Y-pipe is worn out. I am replacing it with the Magnaflow high-flow pipe (if I can ever get it shipped to me).

I haven't done much exhaust work, so I need a little help.

My questions are:

1. Should I put in new O2 sensors as well, even though the ones I have now seem to have no problems? I assume that they are located somwhere in the pipe assembly.

2. If new ones are a good idea, should I get OEM parts from Ford, or use the Bosh ones that Autozone sells, or does it matter?

3. Will this new pipe cause any problems with the sensors and the information sent to the computer, or will it automatically adjust for the slight increase in air flow?

Car is 1990, Just turned over 115,000 miles this morning. Obviously 3.0 MTX, Everything is original except for a K&N filter, and Summit turbo mufflers. No other modifications.

1. Not necessary to replace them unless you really want to. They do mount to the Y-pipe.

2. Bosches from AZ are perfectly fine.

3. No.

I'd expect some trouble getting the O2's out, may wind up breaking them but since your stock pipe has had it might as well try. PB Blaster is your friend.

The studs at the manifolds are very likely to break too, I don't think I'd even try without several cycles of (you guessed it) PB Blaster and then get them hot. Even then I'd expect be trying to break them in a way that left you something to grab, and have a torch available.

Good luck,
- Jeff

Thanks for the information guys.

I do have an excellent mechanic with all the proper equipment at a muffler / repair shop to do it anyway, so he will have whatever is needed.

The sensors only cost about $40 each, so it's no big deal if he breaks the old ones. I just didn't know how hard they were to change after the pipe is installed, so was just trying to avoid problems later.

O2's are a 22mm wrench (or O2 socket) & about 5 minutes once you're under the car in an MTX SHO. An ATX SHO on the other hand... find a friend with a really thin wrist & the patience of Job.

I had a new Y-Pipe put in, sensors were OK . . BUT soon after the pipe went in, the Engine Light came ON and all the symptoms of bad sensors appeared. Do yourself a favor and spring for the sensors while you're doing the pipe, save the aggravation and money of doing 'em later. They should be replaced every 60K anyway. Get 'em at Rock Auto for $20 a pop.

3.0 oxy sensors today on Rockauto vary from $8.71 to $38.99 each, so yes you could get them for around $10 each...
