This is annoying. I have a 91 plus that I fixed up and drove home from MT to SD last fall. I didnt have any problems with it. The car was parked for four months while I went to basic and ait. My buddy was going to bring it to the airport for me but when he went to start it, the negative battery terminal melted off. He bought a new battery and starter relay, but all it would do then is click when he turned the key. I had a good starter in the garage so we changed out the starter. That didn't change anything so we inspected all of the wiring and fuses, replaced the IRCM and ECM, and still no change. When you turn the key to on, the pump primes and everything clicks like it's supposed to, and the tach needle goes up a little bit. Then when you turn the key to start, the starter relay buzzes, and the tach goes up to 3 or 4k, but it doesn't turn over. I'm working on pulling the codes. It's been a while so I had to look up how to do it again. Any ideas?

If it's not the starter, it may the alternator. Mine went on me like 6 months ago on my 94' SHO, and again a couple weeks ago. Take your alternator out and get it checked, see if it's pullin a current. Ya may need a new one, don't by re-built. That's what I did the first time, and it died again...

Well, I guess the battery wasn't new. I thought it was but it only showed 8 volts when I tested it. I dropped a new battery in today and it fired right up. I am pretty sure the starter was the culprit of the shorting problem, unless for some reason a bad ECU could be at fault.

Here's another question though. If a battery was bad, would that keep a car from roll starting, even though the alternator powers up the accessories when it is pulled in gear?
