my car has been fine up until yesterday when i tried to start it it would not even crank. so today i took the starter out checked the solenoid and the leads for 12V. The same single clip on lead was not registering 12V?? bu the starter when i directly attached it to the battery was spinnig. But once i bolted everything back together the car started then after three times starting then turnig off, it would not start again. Any help would be appreciated. I replace the CPS a year ago and the starter 2 yrs ago. Maybe the ignition switch or transmission selctor wire (park or Neutral)???

Brian,

It sounds like the copper disc in the solenoid may be corroded. This can cause intermittent starter operation. I don't know if the solenoid can be taken apart and the disc cleaned. I would just puchase a new solenoid.

Since I'm not familiar with the 95 starter, isn't the solenoid built into the starter on those? Can you purchase them separately from the starter? I ask so I'll know if the same type question arises in the future. thumb

When this condition happens do you have any power...do your interior lights work? are they dim?

yes i have power but the lead from the ignition is not registering 12V when the key is turned to the run position but it will start sometimes?
I am going to get a starter from the junkyard and go from there.

Does anyone know where the relay is? because i found a plug on the drivers side but the connector has 8 outputs that are not numbered which wire is coming from the ignition?

The wire going to the starter solenoid will not register 12v in the run position. You have to have someone turn it to the start position to get 12v. To determine if the starter motor is bad you can simply jump from the positive battery terminal to the 12v solenoid terminal with a wire. Do this with the ignition switch in the off position so the engine won't start running. If the starter motor is good then it will turn the engine over.
