i believe sometimes its the cluster. It was explained to me once, but I do not remember what exactly the issue was. Mine bounces all over the place or will just say I'm doing about 30 MPH more than I am.

I have the same problem now. Changer speedo gear in transmission, cable, so I think it is speedometer itself. I think in my other car years ago, was the same storry, but ended with ,,,ha-ha, 292000mile speedometer , that I had to put on the car.

My speedo needle only wobbles on the current speed (like if 30 it'll jiggle around ~28-32) if I let off the clutch and gas and let it coast down the highway. Stops wobbling when I press the clutch in and continue to coast or if I accelrate
I've only seen this happen on MTX cars so I assume it's just that?

You could try lubing the cable first to see if that helps. That's a quick/easy thing to do. NAPA sells some kind of special speedo **** IIRC.

white lithium grease. but you have to get the spray kind, not the kind in the tube. and watch where you spray it because it can go everywhere.

ask me how i know.

yes you need to take the instrument cluster out. If you've never done it before be patient so you don't break anything. I can get mine out in around 10 minutes.

this link might help a tiny bit.

Ok so im finally going to try to **** my speedo cable, i cant take it anymore! My question is, where the cable goes into the transmission there is a metal clip on the end of the cable that looks like it needs to be pulled out to remove the cable. The problem is i am scared to remove it because it looks like i wil have one **** of a time getting it back in! has anyone ever done this??

I would like to know this too. My speedometer doesn't work at all. I pulled my cluster partially out today, just enough so I can fit my hand on the back of the speedo. My speedo cable is connected, so I'm thinking it's not connected to the trans. Is this easy to reach from underneath?

Stangbanger, if you look at your firewall you can see the speedo cable coming out and going into the transmission on the top, so its accessable from the top side. I just dont know if i can just pull the cable out from the tranny without any damage or issues putting it back in and nobody seems to answer this question......

Same here! Usually your speedo cable is going bad when it wobbles all around. Easy fix too. Get another from a junk yard...

Speaking of clip on speedo cable between mtx just above vss... dont remove the clip completely, instead just pull or tug the clip nearly halfway and hold it there while using your other available hand and pull the cable straight up. it will pop out without ill-effect.
