Ok I am entirely clueless as to how to hook this up, this is actually for my truck but still maybe someone can help me out. I recently acquired a 12" Autotek Supersport sub from a friend for very cheap. I need to know two things,

one, what kind of amp will I need\do you guys recommend?

and

two, how the heck do you hook these things up?

I have a Pioneer DEH P2000 Deck, nothing special but it works. It is in an 87 ford F-150 it has pioneer speakers in the back and in both doors, not sure much more info than that

guy I got it from said that I had to run the RCA's from the back of the deck to an amp, I understand that part. then he said I need to use the trigger wire from the deck and connect that to the amp too. and then connect the amp to the sub

is any of this right?

Yes that is right but info on hte sub would be good to buy the right sub. I never heard of the brand of sub so there may be a reason why you got it so cheap. You will need a seperate power wire from the battery for the amp as well as a grounding wire. You will need to hook up the amp to the remote turn on of the stereo. THen speaker wire to the sub. If you need help I will be glad to help.

These are the specs on the sub from their site,

SS-124B 12" Subwoofer, 4 Ohm, Power Handling - 500 Watts Double Stacked 40 Oz Magnets

it sounded great in his truck, but he is buildong something larger and more powerful than before so he sold it to me for $20 bucks sounded good to me it retails for 150, and it was hardly ever used at all

so what kind of amp would work well for this thing?

Well go with a mono Class D amp that should be the best for your amp. Use the power rating on the amp at 4ohm, max power. What I dont like about the sub is that they dont tell you if it is max or rms which would help. Match it with a amp that does no more then 500 watt max@ 4ohm. Some good brands would be MTX, Alpine, Kenwood, or JL. Hope this helps.

Survey says, DON'T DO THIS. Mono amps usually put out all their power below 4 ohms. Since you have a 4 ohm single voice coil subwoofer, I'd reccommend getting a stereo amp and bridging it to 4 ohm mono. At work we have a little powerhorse MTX amp model Thunder342. It beats the crap out of the Infinity 12s which are the same power rating as your sub. As far as running power from your battery, if your truck is auto there's a little tear out piece in the rubber on the firewall. Yank that out and drill a hole through the firewall. Use that and fish the wire all the way from the battery to the trunk. Don't forget a fuse less than 18" from the battery. On the opposite side of the truck, run RCA signal wires and a remote turn on lead (blue wire/white stripe on the back of your radio).

If you get lost, email me about it.

Quadmasta knows his shit...

You'll have to spend mad loot on a mono D amp to put out good power at 4 ohms.

I'm willing to bet your sub is 500 max and about 150rms @4 ohms. Do some research by visiting some car audio web sites. Check out this amp... B2.150.2 it's perfect spec-wise for what you're looking for.

...IMO that Lightning Audio 450w amp will take good care of your sub...and save you some money. Also, Lightning audio is owned by rockford fosgate, which makes me think their amps are the same internally as the older fosgates...which we all know are better than the new ones. :D

Your wrong ..... There was 2 guys (techs) at Fosgate that wanted a raise. Fosgate told them no, they said take this job and shove it. They now work for MTX getting the money they want and have their own line of Mono Class D amps (which are rated lower than what they are). Since then ... MTX sales went up. I belive they also had something to do with the RFL 15.

Rickie I actually heard something of the sort...I also heard something about RF and MB quart teaming up on something, not too sure tho.

Anyways, I'm not being sarcastic, but what does your reply have to do with RF not owning LA?

Friends don't let friends use Class D amps. :)

Friends don't let friends use Line Drivers. :)

It seems to me the only thing accomplished here is confusion more than anything. Me doing installation for a living, know exactly what you all are talking about, but to the less-than-knowledgeable person, mass confusion has set in. Andrew, take your sub into your local stereo shop, find a good box for it, when I say good, I mean cubic ft. wise, not stylewise. (A "Good" sales professional should be a major help with this.) Have the sales person toss it in a few boxes and hook it up and listen to it with various amps. If they are a decent shop and want your business they'll be more than happy to help you with all your shopping needs. Customers pull me out of the install bay weekly to help them pick and choose product with their exsisting equipment. Its not as uncommon as it sounds.

Happy hunting!

Bridging is where you take an amp intended for stereo use and only run one set of outputs across both output terminals. It's hard to explain. If you're only runnin one single voice coil sub, get a stereo amp and bridge it.

Ok got that lightning audio amp, specs seem to match what I need and the price was right. ok now which wire from my deck is supposed to go to the amp, the tech I talked to explained how to bridge the amp, and he says he thinks it is the blue wire from my deck but he isn't 100% and didn't have the book handy

Most of the time the remote lead for Pioneers is the blue wire. I'm guessing you don't have the owner's manual anymore?
