I am noticing that my wipers like to jump upwards occasionally. I really noticed it the other day around 80 mph. The wires were running back and forth and then all of a sudden the wiper about flew right off the windshield. At first I thought it was broken. It moved far enough to where it actually left the windshield and was resting on the door frame. It then came back after a second. Any ideas?

I have had this happen on two different SHOs - and in both cases it was the wiper transmission that eventually failed. There is a small bal-and-socket pivot joint in the transmission that develops play over time, before failing by physically separating. When it separates, the right (passenger) wiper will "fail and flail".

So is this part within the linkage section underneath the black plastic trim? I was thinking something with the motor. Are these parts replaceable?

Yes, it's underneath that valence trim panel (you have to pull both). There are two long-arms, the transmission pivot, and two posts that both wiper arms fit onto - that makes up the assembly.

After removing the four torx screws (I think they're T-30 torx), there is a pain-in-the-ass clip on the wiper motor arm. When you reassemble it, make sure you get the clip completely back on, as it will eventually pop-off if you don't (and of course in July right in the middle of one of those torrential Florida afternoon thunderstorms . . . ).

The dealer will refer to it as a "Pivot Assembly", Dealer List [was] $98.98, and the assembly may be obsolete. I think I paid $6.99 ea. for the two I bought at Pick-n-Pull several months ago. If you get one from a salvage yard, get one from a low mileage Taurus/Sable that has as little play as possible in the pivot. Don't rely on the play by moving the wiper arms, as I found it was not a good predictor.

It will take you ~15-minutes and a knuckle-cut or two the first time, about 5-minutes after you've done it a few times. I'll usually pull 2-or-3 assemblies and buy the best one. The extra time it takes outweighs the cost of gas and time if you have to go back a second or third time . . . . :burnout:

Thanks for the help. I will have to look into this. It is freezing cold here in Michigan and I am now finding my starter to be junk. Sometimes I just wish I could go one month without having to work on this thing.

Sometimes my wipers travel a bit too far and tap the door frame and other times they're completely fine. I've adjusted them so that they're all the way down when off, and it seems fine for a few minutes, and then the tapping starts again. It seems completely random as to when they tap and when they don't.

This sounds like it's the same problem starting, eh? I guess I'll have to take off the valence panel and take a look when it gets a bit warmer too.

The only two places you get play like that, is the pivot-joint or the wiper motor arm that drives the wiper transmission. Once you have the transmission out, it will be pretty obvious where the play has developed.

Anyone else with this issue?? I have had my SHO a long time and it has always done this. I believe when I first bought it (8 years ago) I replaced the wiper motor and transmission but I honestly can't remember. After 8 years of ownership I have finally decideded to see what causes this. I removed the motor today and I do not see anything out of the ordinary but I will replacing it anyways. I am thinking the linkage that connects to the transmission and wiper arms might have some play from being old. Anyone know if there are replacements for this?

both of mine have done it. the 95 seems to do it alot more than the 92 did. but i have noticed that it will only go past the point it should stop when on high at highway speeds

That's exactly what mine does if I am doing anything over 60MPH and it's slighlty windy they seem like they are going to fly off my windshield.

They did it from new......

It's a "feature" on old SHOs.....get used to it!!

Im use to it but after 8 years of ownership I finally can say I have fixed everything on this car and it currently has no problems so I was bored and decided to see if this was a common problem on the SHOs or maybe someone has come up with a fix for this.

The fix is simple.

I used to live on the north coast of California. Rain central.

80+mph in the fog and drizzle was common.

The ONLY way to accomplish this with an old SHO is with Rain X ;)

In the "Help" section in most parts stores they sell a pack of plastic wiper linkage bushings. I replaced the bushings on my '90 with some of those (they took a little modifying to fit properly) and it made it 95% better. The wipers don't hit the door frame anymore and they almost park completely. I think to get them 100% like new I will have to replace the wiper motor.

Edit: It's Dorman p/n 49447
