I recently was driving on the highway back to school and it started to rain lightly. I flipped on the wipers as anyone would do. Shortly the wipers got pushed to the side of the windshield and only came back halfway on each wipe. This (obviously) caused sight problems with only half a windshield to see through. I was going about 85mph. When I got off the Hwy the wipers functioned normally. Has anyone experienced this problem or knows how I can remedy it. I have to drive 400 miles hwy back to CT on Fri and there is a chance of rain. I don't want to have to strain to see the whole time. BTW it happened @ 75 too so slowing down doesn't really seem to help. Any thoughts?

On the 92 if it's real windy and I'm at speed sometimes they will hit the side kinda hard (you can hear it) but they always go back all the way.

Try screwing around with the switch, those are common to fail

My 91+'s wipers never work good on the freeway if I use the intermittent settings, but the slow and fast setting work fine.

completely off subject:

i remember when i first got my car the wiper motor barely worked, and when the wipers went up they would only go down so far, and then stop cause there wasnt enough power to get them all the way down. the first day i opened my car up on the expressway they finally went down at 110+ mph. it was scary when they just slammed down.

thats all.

the wipers on my 93 SHO and my 92 sable both dont work for crap above 80.

i think my SHO's wiper motor is dying tho, if i put it on the high setting it will slowly get slower and slower, until its faster to actually put it on the "low" setting.

That's definitely a weak wiper motor. RainX is great at highway speeds and a set of Anco Aero blades worked great even up to 85mph. They would never lift and cleaned great.

never had a problem with wipers at 85. now try cleaning your windshield at 100, the wipers never touch the glass. (don't really try it...very very bad idea!!!)

try changing the blades, not just the rubber part, but the whole assembly. they can lose a little spring over time. should cost about $6 each at any parts store.

Not really... On long stretchs of freeways in AZ I have done over 100mph in the rain.

EDIT: Then again, when I was in NY, have done 90mph on 12inches of snow doh

I knew saying I was going 85 in the rain would cause controvesy. It had just started drizzling when this happened, and even when I slowed to like 70-75 the wipers still malfunctioned. I don't want anyone to think that I'm some crazed F***** that gets kicks from driving triple digits with a 1/2ft. of water on the road. I just need to see when I'm on the highway going home! :D Again thanks for the replies. I had a feeling that I wasn't the only one with this problem, and that the wiper design on these cars is extremely bad. I'm gonna try a different blade and see if that helps (as some of you have said it did help you). If not, well look out for a red 90 heading east on rt.17 tomorrow! :D
