1989 vehicle. Heat is hot, vents blow hot air, windshield defrost blows hot air but only enough to defrost the bottom part of the windshield. Windows won't defrost either.

Any ideas?

Funny smell when the heat is on? Maybe a lot of water in the carpets?

AC refridgerant leaked out, not sure if the AC system works - I doubt it.

Sometimes it smells like coolant when the heat is on - same smell as my 88 tempo. I have't noticed any water on the carpets.

I've had the problem you describe and it is coolant either leaking from the heater core or the hoses are leaking where they attach to the core. You get a funny taste when the coolant is in the air.

I think you may be on to something, but why would this affect the defrost?
