I have what I think is excessive wind noise on the front side windows - at the top seal right above my ear. Quite loud at speeds over 60mph or so. My last SHO was also noisey but my new one (97) seems louder to me. Is this common to all Gen 3's? Is there a fix?

Thanks,

Mark B.

I agree, V8SHO.com is the place to look.
Once you're there, go to "Care and feeding of the '96-'99 Taurus SHO", then scroll down to "Windnoise at A Pillar TSB 96-14-1"

Bet the noise isn't from your A-Pillar.....

I'll bet that the noise you are hearing is from the b Pillar on the door. What you will notice is the "seal / track" that the window is guided in may be bulging out when you put the window up. You are hearing wind noise from that seal pulling away from the door. Technically the only proper way to fix it is to replace that seal assembly as it has plastic "tabs" that secure it tot he door and prevent it from doing this. I have had a bit of success with body trim adhesion foam tape (3M stuff). Make sure you put the tape on when the car is good and dry and above 60 degrees for best results. Clean everything thoroughly. My first attempt let loose after a couple of good cool rainy days. The second attempt is holding up better, but I'll probably end up replacing the seal assembly....

Open your door,a nd look at the rear window to door seal and wind your window up, You'll see that seal move out quite a bit (3/16") and that is where your noise is coming from. You can prove this by carefulyl putting the window up (but not real tight) and stopping beofre the window is crammed up against the top seal. Then go for a drive, and I'll bet is is quieter, and while you are driving raise the window all the way and I'll bet it gets louder...

Hope that helps!

Sorry to resurrect such an old post but I'm having a problem with B-pillar wind noise and this is the only post I found. If anybody has a pic of the temporary solution (foam tape) or knows how much the permanent solution (new seals) costs and the difficulty of replacing them please chime in.

thanks,

Scott

I ended up bellying up to the bar and replacing the seals as the tape solution failed too often for my blood.

The parts are just short of three figures per window if the pricing has held since I bought my seals almost two years ago now.

The part you need is called the "run" and you will need a pop rivet gun to properly replace it as there are two small rivets behind the mirror on the front edge of the door. Everything else unbolts. It is about an hour a door to do it yourself.
