window trim oxidation help...

o.k. well my 94' SHO has little rust but it does have oxidated window trim. the piece that has rubber over aluminum and i think guides the window. i would like to take out this piece and replace it with one from the junk yard or something but i do not know how to take it off and was hoping someone here would know. so any help will be appreciated

Here's something you can try that has worked for me in the past. Instead of removing and replacing the parts, clean the trim with a little naval jelly and 00 (very fine) steel wool, just don't rub too hard or you will scratch the metal. Then use a product called Back to Black on the rubber part. It can be purchased at most any auto parts store.

Just be sure to mask off the area you are working on. The naval jelly can remove paint as well, and the back to black will put some funny looking dots on chrome or shiny aluminum.

Whatever you get at the junkyard will probably have to be cleaned this way anyway before you install it, so why bother taking it off, unless it is beyond cleaning.

well the trim is way past that lol i need the aluminum piece because mine is practically gone its all bubbling and looks bad, i will try to get a picture of it tommorow. i just want to take it out but i don't know how and don't want to ruin anything trying. but thanks for the cleaning info.b

I know that the botton peices come off fairly easily, One or two acorn nuts holding it down, undo those and give it a little bit of pressure upwards and they come right off...

However the other three sides (2 sides and top) I have no idea how to take off, but would seriously like to know also...

T.O i know how the bottom piece comes off too, but its the sides and top that i need off because its all bubbled up and looks stupid, and i would like to know!! lol but i guess i will find out sooner or later. maybe i'll go to the junk yard and expieriment on them! hehe

When you find the part you need at a wrecking yard, don't have them pull it until you get there. Most will let you go with the man pulling the part to see how it comes out.

Since it is an integral part of a door, don't be surprised if they want to sell you the whole door. A lot of wrecking yards won't break up a complete assembly.

If you know anyone at a body shop, or glass shop, they should also be able to tell you how it comes out.

well i have a junk yard around me that has about 5 SHO's and they let you walk around and take whatever you want yourself then you pay before you leave, and i'm hoping that its not hard!, if it is then it will stay ugly. lol but i will have to go to a body shop...or better yet i know someone who works at a body shop so i will ask him how and what not. sigh... i just want my car to look good! damn it seems like forever to do so! i hate SHO's but then i love them so much! lol

the trim pieces are pop-rivited to the doors. you have to take the black rubber around the windows off the doors first then drill out the rivits.

thank you soooooo much i will be visiting my junk yard verry soon!! any way you know what size drill bit to use? and is it easy to put on a new trim piece? do you have to have the window down or anything in particular? gracias mi amigo!

well ohioshodude i tried to take of the rubber but it don't come off! and im not ging to pry it off either...sigh... i do have a picture though so maybe someone will know how..? or know another way or something..

Hey all are we talking about the rubber strip at the bottom of the windows that open. The strip that bubbles? If that is it I didn't know it was fixable.

i am talking about the strip that is all bubbles up on the side of the window about 1in thick, it goes all around the window but for mine the side piece is all bubbled and i would like to know how to replace it.

I think there are studs on them the nuts will have to be removed from the inside first. Or rivets I can't member.

That was the cost for ONE NEW ONE, shipped, BTW. The other side I'd ordered was damaged in transit, UPS picked it up for inspection & I never saw a dime.

I just got 2 doors at $100 each with great window trim. But I needed the whole doors. I asked about the other door trim but he was not interested in selling less than the whole door. Has anyone tried using the liquid rubber used for dipping tool handles?
