The size that most closely matches stock would be 235/45 17. You could also use 225/45 17 or 225/50 17. All my 17" rims always have had 235/45 17. Most popular, most available, probably consistently cheaper. boink

The Toxxins are in fact 7.5" wide.

You can run either the 245/45-17 tires at 25.68" tall or the 225/50-17 tires at 25.86" tall or the stightly shorter 235/45-17 tires at 25.33" tall.

The 225/45-17 tires are really too short at 24.97" tall considering the stock 215/60-16 tires are 26.16" tall, but to each his own wink

Brad, check out the TireRack, lots of surverys and test results, plus some of the best prices out there. As far as an inexpensive summer performance tire, I have heard a lot of good things about the new Yokohama AVS ES100 as well as the Kumho ECSTA Supra 712. They are $109 and $96 each respectively for the 245/45-17 size. The Kumho's are only $91 each for the 235/45-17 size.

I'd go with 235/45, and as John mentioned, they're 7.5" wide, not 7". 235's would be slightly lighter and give you slightly better gearing. Plus, I think 245's are a bit wide for a 7.5" rim. I run 235's on my 8" wheels.

half-way there, I think.
I'm running 245/45's om my 17x7 wheels. I did however have to operate on the rear fender lips.

Either a 245/45-17 tire on a 7.5" wide rim or a 235/45-17 tire on a 7.5" or 8.0" wide rim with a 38-42 mm offset will fit in a Gen II rear wheel well without any triming. A 245/45-17 tire on a 8.0" wide will only fit if you have a 38mm offset rim. I needed a set of custom 2.5mm thick spacers with my 245/45-17 tires on a 8.0" wide 40mm offset rim to keep the tire side walls off the rear strut tubes, and they just barely keep the outside tread shoulder off the trim piece at the lower front edge of the wheel well. I have a '95 MTX with Konis and Eibachs, YMMV.

I have a 215 45 17. It is smaller and gives a good looking low profile. It also makes my speedo faster than my actual speed so i have a better chance of driving closer to the speed limit. Yeah right. It is a 24.8 inch tall tire. I also run 205 55 16's which are 25.0 inches high.

In the FYI department, the original sizes for Taurus' was 205-70/14 and 205-65/15, both of which are about 25.5" tall. The steering/handling geometry should easily handle tires much shorter than the SHOs 215-60-/16s. Gotta love those big empty wheel wells!!!
