my nieghbors are annoyed i need to get this mod done asap.

I'm doing the d4u1 swap on my atx and its really p***ing me off. So far I got the old computer out after accidentally removing the wrong nut from under the hood and loosing it after it fell.

Well in any case, I am trying to put it this new computer but it wont go in all the way. I managed to align it and put the plug back in. But for some reason it is really hard to turn the bolt and the d4u1 is really loose. The plug wont go in all the way. I am so mad, I've been fiddling with this computer since 9 oclock... I used a friggin air ratchet and the sh*t still is loose, i dont think i'm cross threading because i took a look at the d4u1 and it doesnt seem to be damaged.

Sorry for the cursing, I'm just mad like h*ll.

Dude..it's cross-threaded. I just chaged mine out 4 weeks ago and it took about 10 minutes. It was effortless with a simple ratchet. and with the chip in, I don't even have that bracket that holds the computer from the inside of the car, and it don't rattle around at all.

Actually, mine's an X2J for my 92 MTX......but it's the same set-up. Unbolt the harness from the engine bay and then pull the 'puter out from behind the glove box...install is the same way. Could also be that you're using the wrong size bolt.......

i wish it were that easy. I already have the old computer out. Im using the same bolt. I test fitted the d4u1 outside of its compartment. It indeed fit, and was easy to bolt together. However, when i try to bolt it from within the glovebox is really difficult. I know I have the thing aligned, there are two teeth at the bottom of the EEC that fit into the bottom of the opening. The plug is a PITA. All those friggin wires bundled up in that area really prohibit me from seeing if the bolt is catching the threads. Obviously something is wrong if you guys are able to bolt it on no prob. I spent the whole day trying to get this friggin thing to fit.

The actual d4u1 doesnt protrude all the way thru the firewall. The teeth align, but I pushed that thing with all my might and it doesnt budge. I think that the plug needs more "meat" at the end of the EEC to catch properly. I think the rubber gaskets are frigging me over.

In any case, I don't know what to do. :frown:

Do you have the wiring harness from the engine compartment bolted to the 'puter?

Okay...let's examine this. Do you have your intake off to make it easier? If not, yank that puppy. Next, check the opening to make sure there's no wires or HVAC hoses in the way of you squashing that 'puter in there. Then check the plug, both on the computer and the harness to make sure there ain't something lodged in there. Next, try to hand screw the bolt into the computer to make sure it fits. If it doesn't, find one that does. If you cross-threaded it, pray you cross-threaded the bolt and not the computer....either way, you may need a tap and die to properly fix it.

Something simple is in the way of you having a D4U1 in your car....it's an easy swap...somethings just in the way, is all.

ok, im in deep sh** now, I tried to remove the d4u1 and it wont come out. I think the cross threading might have damaged it and now I cant remove the computer. I even used and air ratchet to try to unscrew it and it won't come out. Oh God what have i done wrong to deserve this.

You bought an ATX...

j/k j/k... for me the swap was like 10 min.. no.. maybe 20, so much stuff in the way in the engine compartement, but I had practice removing the D4U1 from a junkyard car 2 days earlier so it was a piece of cake. remove that one bolt on the wire harness, then there was a little plastic clip inside the car I took out, slip it out, slip the new one in, put that plastic clip back on, then bolt the harness back in, you might want to check with the computer out of the car if the bolt actually goes in...

Ummm....on a side note, you probably shouldn't be using air tools on a computer......

I know I know, I did this already. My problem now is that the EEC is stuck because I think I have cross threaded it. The eec is also very loose I cannot remove it. Is there a way I could perhaps cut the head of the bolt so that I can remove the eec?

You should be able to put enough pressure on it to turn the bolt out of the hole. Basically, try and pull on the EEC while turning the bolt (with a RATCHET) and it should back out. Otherwise, break out the trusty hacksaw, retap the hole, and start the bolt by hand.........

i had my GF pull it while i turned the bolt. No dice. I even used a wire hanger to loop it around the eec to get more leverage...

A hacksaw does not fit in that area.

I am screwed literally

Looks like you might end up having to slice the plug off the harness and re-wiring one from another SHO on there....but that's last resort kinda stuff. There's gotta be a way. Is the bolt turning at all??

the bolt turns round and round, the eec still seems to be attached to it, the bolt is starting to round off tho.

How do i know if the eec is indeed working? I am able to drive the car...? I drove it twelve miles and the car seems to work. I was even able to check the engine codes.

PHEW!

I have a few questions then:
do you think there is any down side to having it loose?
you think water can get to it?
can i still put a tweecer or ted b lpm if i cannot remove the d4u1?
