my moms 98 sho has an occasional engine whine...seems to happen only when its VERY cold outside. It's got about 85,000 miles, still unwelded (flame away, its not my car). Almost sounds like a turbine engine, but seems to do dissapear when the car is warm.

Any idea's as to the noise

Probably the PS pump or the tranny pump. More information as to the location would make it easier to diagnose.

good point, my mom said it sounded like it was coming "directly in front of" her..so i'm assuming drivers side..i know the water pumps on the drivers side..i'll make my dad pop the hood next time he witnesses it, or just look for it next time i'm home.

My dads 98 has an occasional whine, like that real quiet gtp supercharger whine. Seems to be when cold? Not sure, weird, doesnt effect performance or drivablility.

We are welded.

My 97 whines, it's the alternator, has been doing it since replaced. First one failed right after replacement, put the new one in after that, it still whines, but it hasn't failed in the 10k I put on it so far.

I had a guy at work tell me it sounded supercharged though! :thumb:

The v8 waterpump is practically in the middle, no? On the OTHER side of the engine...

Hate to be a pessimist BUT.... If the wine sounds like its comming from behind the Driver's side wheel then it is most likely the Tranny Pump. Tall tell sign of the bearing crapping out on you. Trust me... i've experienced this twice. Eventually, you'll start loosing gears. :(

yikes..my mom has vowed that if her car dies a sudden unfortunate sho death..she's getting a new mustang gt..

Hopefully its not the tranny pump..

i'd rather she get the mustang, but keep the sho in good running condition..

AND GIVE IT TO ME! MUAHAHAHAHA :dribble:

Since it only happens when cold she is most likely hearing the SAI pump.

My car also has a whine that makes it sound supercharged. Seems to happen to just about every gen3.

Well, thats how mine was anyways. Would go away as soon as it warmed up... I really hope its not a tranny. :frown: Its not a fun experience. Good Luck

I'm going with 97V8SHO and MiltownSHO. I also believe it's the alternator. My '96 OEM alternator had a crack in the house and believe it or not, as it expanded in temperature the house changed shape and the sound changed too. Eventually, I decided to replace it when I had the engine dropped to replace two cams, one head and 16 valves, when a cam slipped. Ahhh, the good old days - remembering back when the cam slipped! *!#@^$ But thanks to Captain Kirk, there's nothing to worry about again.

Do a stick test . Take a solid piece of wood broom stick or equivalent about a few feet long . Start the car and hold one end to the tranny bellhousing (top) and the other to your ear . Then repeat the process for the power steering pump (front , top , center) . Which is louder ?

Just an update..my mom took the car to the dealership. Appearantly it was low on power steering fluid, and there was some air locked in the system. One of the mechanics notes read "if problem persists, may need new rack and pinion"

eek
