Which battery?

Hey Guy’s, I have to replace my battery I have been looking at odyssey was thinking of getting the performance one but idk which is best is expensive battery make a difference?

I've gotten in the habit of only using the gel batteries in all of my vehicles and trailer. Optima is all I use now, even put two in the diesel. The water batteries have lasted me on average 3-5 years, but the Optima gel batteries, my oldest one is 9 years old and still going. I'm using 6 of them right now with my newest being a year old. Once a water acid battery dies, an Optima goes in. Good luck!

Mine died and I was desperate. $60 bucks at Rural King. I removed the sticker so no one sees where it came from. Works though.

if your vehicle had an oem agm battery get an agm battery. batteries from enersys or east penn should do you good regardless of actual brand name.

if not and willing to update the pcm, get an agm battery. else stick with standard lead acid.

odyssey performance is more like any other name brand agm battery. extreme is where the value is with the TPPL technology. other batteries will drain 0.05v or more per day just stitting there, extreme barely 0.01v. makes a big difference if you don't drive your vehicle very much. plus has an edge on ccas too.

the key to any battery's life is keeping it topped up. many of us are shorttripping these days or have our vehicles parked outside, which creates a hostile life for the battery. you will want to be able to put it on a tender regularly if so. alternators are generally only good for topping up batteries on highway drives of say 25 miles or more one-way.

i have considered lithium before due to the power/weight ratio, but a) most likely the SHO will not know how to charge it properly, b) may have poor winter performance unless it has some sort of preheat function, and c) could pose a real fire hazard. i would investigate thoroughly with the battery mfr before deciding.

What do you mean by "update the pcm" when replacing lead acid with agm. I have had an AGM battery in my SHO for years, as well as my Isuzu VehiCROSS before that, and never had to "update the pcm".

Are you talking about resetting the BCM? (I never did that either.) Doesn't this apply regardless of what type battery you install?

Are you talking about resetting the BCM? (I never did that either.) Doesn't this apply regardless of what type battery you install?

the pcm has a programmable setting for battery type. if it came from factory with an agm battery, it will be set to agm. if it came with an sla battery, it will be set to sla. so if changing battery type, you should update the setting to the new battery type for proper charging characteristics.

I never heard of the SHO's having the programmable method for the batteries. I know the newer Volkswagens do though, that was a bitch to figure out! Anyway, I swapped my Gel Optima into the SHO roughly 4 months ago with no issues. True test this morning since it was -6 degrees at my house in middle TN!!! Started right up after I pried my door open.

Does anyone know if my 2019 SHO PP came with an AGM battery from the factory? I assume the car came with a Motorcraft-branded battery (AGM/SLA)?

Since the vehicle has been on the road for over four years (edit: I previously assumed the battery was original, but there's a Diehard in there), and its previous owners' climates were both extreme hot/cold, I was planning to replace the battery immediately regardless. I chose the larger-capacity Odyssey for the following reasons:

Odyssey Extreme ODX-AGM65 (65-PC1750):

• Car will go several days at a time without being driven.
• Will often use engine-off, accessory-power (e.g., scanners, radios, lights, etc.).

Also, our Southern California road-trips will take us through extreme desert-heat as well through snow and freezing-temperatures so I wanted to be sure I had a robust, high-capacity battery solution.

idk about the oem battery ...

but yes the odyssey is about as robust as they come. i will say that if you have devices like dashcams running 24/7, you will find the battery needing to be recharged after a prolonged period of non-use. putting your vehicle into Dark Mode (iirc) may help with battery drain in this case but not allow you to use accessories.

maybe a solar charging solution in addition to the odyssey battery is what you need for the longterm.
