More than likely it's the valve guides/seals. Cats do a good job of cleaning up the smoke.

One quart per thousand miles is not unusual.

Just keep a spare quart in the trunk and add it every 3rd fuel fillup or so. That's what I've been doing for th last 20K miles since I got this car.

FWIW, a thicker viscosity oil will be consumed more slowly, by at the risk of inadequate lubrication in the tight tolerences.
