i have my wheels balanced with the taped weights on the inside of the rim because i dont trust them not to smack the crap out of rim and take the finish off the rims. the guys at the shop gave me a :madflame: when i told them i wanted them on the inside too. i know the taped ones are for rims that dont have an outside lip but whats so bad about putting them on my rims?

what do you guys prefer and is there anything bad about the taped inside weights?

I've lost some of the tape weights before - I typically just have them put on regular weights on the rim. I don't care that much about the slicers, though.

A static balance (weights on both inside and outside lips of a rim) will give you the most accurate balance. But, as long as you have the techs clean the inside of the rim before putting on sticky weights, they should stay on. Also, after the rim is balanced, have them hit the weights with a rubber hammer to be sure that they're on there tight.

I use taped weights because I don't want my powder coat to get scuffed. If the surface is clean, the forces that are on the weights when spinning will secure them and stay. I have not lost any and they are stuck on very well.

I care about my slicers ;)

yea i love my slicers. mine got the factory coating scraped off on one of the wheels from when they hammered the weight on so thats why i put em on the inside. maybe some day when i have some extra cash i will chrome or powder coat my slicers.

Static is one weight on the inside

Dynamic is with weights on the outside and inside lips :D

Where's the headbang graemlin when I need it? I guess we usually say static more than we say dynamic around the shop. Thanks for the correction. :thumb:

Right after the shop gets done balancing the wheels, go home and put a bead of silicon calking around the corners of the stick on wheel weights. It will prevent any water and road debris from wearing away at the tape. Plus the calking itself will act to help hold the weights against the wheel.

It is a little trick that I learned after balancing motorcycle tires with stick on weights.

OH you didn't know
Have the tire shop so a dual tape weight....one weight goes on the inside lip of the back....the other goes on the barrel of the wheel as close to the back of the face of the wheel. This is the best balance for wheels with no lip on the face, and for those who do not want weights showing. Static balancing is not a very good balance in my opinion. If the shop takes their time cleaning the surface before installing the weights..there should be no need for silicone on the wheel weights, it just makes it a PITA to remove if you ever have the wheels/tires rebalanced. I have seen people put duct tape over the tape weight though. GOOD LUCK! :thumb:
