So I have two broken wheel studs, and am hoping I can replace them without pulling the hub because if I have to, it's safe to say I'm kind of screwed. Don't have the tools for it nor the cash get them. It looks like there isn't room clearance to do this at the spot where there seems to be the most clearance (about 2 o'clock, when looking from the front), but I'm hoping someone else knows from experience if that's actually the case.

pulling the hub's not very difficult nor expensive. it's bolt in rather than press fit. though ya may as well pick up a new hub and get all new studs and a new bearing in the process.

No hub socket, no breaker bar, no joint fork, no hammer bigger than a ball peen, no pry bar or equivalent for pulling the control arm down, etc. You know how it goes: As soon as I get in there I'll strip the bearings in my ratchet trying to break the hub nut, need an air hammer or sledge to pop the axle free, a fork to pull the ball joint free, the tire iron I'll have to use as a pry bar to pull the arm down won't give me enough leverage or will slip, and mt 3/8" hand ratchet won't have enough to break those three hub nuts. Murphy's law and I go WAY back, especially when it comes to working on cars. Sure as the sun shines, at least two of those things will happen.

:stupid: it's ALWAYS been a full refund at advanced auto for me, and i've rented all of the above except for the pry bar. and let's face it, a 1/2" ratchet don't cost that much...stop making excuses and just do it.

i think you can wiggle a stud thru the back and replace it. all its worth is a try. if it cant be done. then your gonna have to at the least get the hub off, good idea to replace it.

I didn't even know that any of those places rented individual tools, never mind "make excuses". And not for anything, but since I don't see you offering to throw in $15-20 to the cause you might want to tone it down and not be quite so casual with other people's money since some of us are on a pretty tight budget nowadays. If it were that simple I wouldn't have mentioned it in a public forum in the first place.

be a dick if you want, but that doesn't change the fact that any of the major chain stores (advanced auto, auto zone, etc) WILL rent the tools necessary to do that job and many others to anyone. you pay a deposit, they give you tools. use the tools, take them back, and they'll give your ENTIRE deposit back. i don't know about your advanced auto, but mine charged something like 75 total for an axle nut set, pickle fork set (which has attachments for the ball joint AND tie rod). ya gotta pay to play, son.

my girls car broke some studs due to lose lug nuts... i just hit them with a hammer there is a sweet spot that each bolt will slide out after you knock it out i did it on the car, just took the tire off. look on the hub for a crevise big enough that a bolt would slide out... tap one out spin hub tap another spin again and so on and so forth really simple....

i had a extra hub! but if you have a extra like i did make sure you grind any flat spots out of the end of the stud so the lug goes on smooth...

if you had flat spots you must have mushroomed the end of the stud?

keep a lug on the stud so you dont damage the stud?

other wise i don't know what your talking about

The studs will come out the back without removing anything but the wheel. Leave a lugnut on there while you bang away so you don't mushroom the end of the stud....as stated above.
