They are two completely different units. Gen I uses a remote mounted solenoid and a Bendix drive, where the Gen II uses a starter mounted solenoid on a PMGR motor and sliding drive. The torque numbers are slightly higher for a PMGR starter.
Another big difference is the cost. Gen 1 starters are less than half the price of Gen 2 starters. I put a Gen 2 starter on my '91 Plus years ago and love it. It is smaller, has a neater appearance, sounds better and is easier to work around. I left all the Gen 1 wiring/parts in tact, so I can go back to a Gen 1 starter at anytime.
I got ripped by a few members on the forum for taking off a cheap starter and replacing it with a high dollar unit. At the time I had a garage full of Gen 2 SHO parts, so why would I buy one when I had probably 10 Gen 2 starters out in my garage?
