5W-30, unless your going to be driving in the Sahara(did I spell that right?) Desert. Go ahead and get the FL-400S Motorcraft filter too. wink

Explain what the bigger filter does that the 400S can't? Does it have the silicone valve?

what does it do? Well its twice the size so it filters twice as good.. Also puts it twice as close to the Exhaust manifold to get twice as hot.

The FL1a is Fords most used Filter, If Ford thought it would have been better or safer to use then it would have came on the car. Unless you have a relocation kit for the filter use the smaller 400s.

I thought about that, but I figure the oil cooler should take care of any excess heat from the filter. ****, maybe it will help heat my oil in the morning faster.

10w-30 is a more shear-stable viscocity of GTX..use it in the summer if you can. 5w-30 in the winter, 3k between changes max.

So the FL1A will 'not' fit the SHO unless you have a relocation kit or is that maybe just the ATX? Is the heat thing a bad idea? I remember something about GPM and pressure, but thought that's what the silicone valve is for on the 400S. Am I wrong? shrug

The FL1A will fit a MTX SHO for sure, but it might be a tight squeeze on an ATX. I don't think the heat is going to be an issue, but that is up for debate. If someone with an oil temp gauge that runs FL1As posts some high numbers, I'll switch - but for now I think the heat exchanger will take care of any excess heat.

The silicon valve in the FL400S is the anti-drainback valve; it's there so oil from the dirty side of the filter dosen't drain back into your engine. Silicon is the preferred material, it's more durable than the black nitrile.

Wether the filter media itself on a FL400 (Or even FL1A) can flow 12gpm like a SHO oil pump can, I doubt it. It will probably go into bypass and let the rest of the oil pass the media and into the engine. The filter is still filtering some oil, but not the full flow amount.

So, when I put a double core radiator in my car, and the radiator is twice as close to the exhaust, the engine is going to run twice as hot? SHIT, and I was considering doing that. Why even run a radiator at all? All its going to do is get hot from the exhaust...

Get some real evidence for your wild ass claim and I'll believe it.

Dude...can Kirk be owned? Say it isn't so!

In all seriousness, I run the FL1A on all my shos, and haven't had any issues yet. BUT, my 95 was running a quart low, and I sent the g/f (blonde) to get a quart and add it until I change oils tomorrow on the cars. She gets 20w30 and adds a quart to the mix. The car has 10w-30 in it now. Will this cause any problems? It has been in now for about a week. Just curious.

Note to self....don't let pretty blonde g/f buy oil anymore.... thumb

Gotta love those pretty blond g/f's huh! I even made mine my wife wink How can you blame them for getting the wrong oil when they're so pretty........ (btw, my wife is never responsible for the oil purchase!)

Not too sure on the mixing of those weights. Doubt it will cause anything catastrophic, but I sure couldn't advise running it for 3k miles! Hopefully someone with a better background on oil weights can chime in.

From my experiences you can mix and match oils with no major problems. Dont lose any sleep over it if you are changing it in a week or so.

I experienced an increase in oil pressure across the board going with an FL1A filter. Especially while hot. I recommend it.
