Do I have to completely change the a/c hardware in my 1994 SHO (MTX) in order to utilize the currently available refrigerants (or whatever the term) ?
My a/c hasn't worked in 10 - 12 years. The last time i had a mechanic look at it, they added freon (back when this was legal) and it worked for a short period of time - then I suppose it leaked and dissipated...
I thought i saw a post on this site some time ago that the a/c systems in the 1994 SHO are compatible with the new environmentally okay replacements for freon -- ??? -- - but cannot locate that thread now.
My car is MTX.
Suggestions and guidance would be appreciated - via reply to this thread or PM to me here or email at sbcglobal.net.
Thank you !

The new stuff (134a?) is A-OK with your 94. I think it even came in it when it was new. You do not have to change anything. The Freon 12 is the older refrigerant that was in the early models.
There is lots of info on here as to how to get the compressor to cycle, how to make sure the clutch is working and what to do if it is not and how to fill it with a product like interdynamics that has a can a gauge fill system and some have dyes as well. My advice is to give it a shot yourself, as it can't do any harm.
The older ones can be refilled with 134a as well, as it is backward compatable as far as seals go. Usually people report it does not cool as well.

94-95 MTX should already be R134a.

The main thing you need to do is find the leak(s), fix them, vacuum in down, make sure it holds a vacuum and recharge.

In my '89, besides the fittings, all that's needed is to get the R12 oil out and replace it with R134A oil and refrigerant?

according to the book, you need to replace the compressor, oil separator and expansion valve.

in my experience, if you drain the compressor, lines, and oil separator carefully, you will get enough of the old oil out that the system will work okay with the new oil.

I have a 1994 ATX SHO and it is a factory R-134 system. Amazingly, I have never had any issues since the car was new. I did have to put a new clutch coil pack on the compressor as it weakend and would not suck the drive plate to the drive pulley when the thermostat called for A/C clutch engagement and shimming would not repair the issue.
