Ford applies a Lithium-type grease to the throwout bearing race. I used a tube of the same to lubricate the designated locations. The following section is from the procedure I wrote following my clutch job.
Clutch Maintenance
1. Clean the inside of the transaxle case bell housing.
2. Inspect the bolt threads in the transaxle for damage. If the clutch or transaxle has been serviced before, there is a possibility the threads have been stripped. The most easily stripped are the lower two 13mm bolt locations from the oil pan to the transaxle. If any threads are damaged, either a longer bolt may be used to reach the unused threads or a thread repair insert (Heli-Coil or Perma-Coil) may be used.
3. Remove the clutch throwout (release) bearing from the quill tube by removing the polymer (plastic) pin that connects the upper clutch fork to the throwout bearing.
4. If replacing the throwout bearing actuation shaft bushings or actuation fork, remove the 14mm bolt from the fork (this bolt was installed with Loctite and significant force may be required) and slide the shaft out the top of the case. Remove the felt washer from the shaft and the bushings from the case if replacements are to be installed.
5. Clean or replace the quill tube. If a steel sleeve is already installed on the quill, it may be cleaned and reused or removed and replaced with a new steel sleeve. If the existing steel quill tube is to be reused, ensure that it is secure. If a steel sleeve was not installed, install the new steel sleeve per the instructions provided with the throwout bearing kit. A special Loctite adhesive is made for sleeve repairs. If this is not available, use blue, medium strength Loctite. Do not apply lubricant or adhesive to the outer surface of the quill tube where the throwout bearing slides. The outer surface of the quill tube should be clean and smooth.
6. If replacing the throwout bearing actuation shaft bushings, install the new bushings in the case with the longer bushing on the lower mount. The shorter bushing of the two is installed at the top of the case. No lubricant is to be applied to the bushings as they are pre-lubricated. It can be supplemented if desired.
7. Install the clutch actuation shaft. Slide a new felt washer on the actuation fork. Hold the actuation fork with one hand the shaft in the other and slide the shaft down through the upper bushing, the fork and finally the lower bushing. Secure the actuation fork to the shaft with the 14mm bolt using blue Loctite and torque 30-40 lb-ft.
8. Install a new throwout bearing and secure it to the actuation fork with a new poly pin. Ensure that the bearing is correctly oriented with the solid center ring facing outward from the bell housing. Clean the center ring of the bearing that contacts the clutch fingers with solvent.
9. Apply lubricant to the throwout bearing attachment pin and inboard surfaces, the upper and lower flanges of the throwout bearing and the rounded portions of the fork tips. These are the areas where the fork presses against the throwout bearing. The Motorcraft bearing is supplied with white grease at the proper locations. Also apply lubricant to the end of the clutch release lever where the cable attaches. Do not grease the outer surfaces of the throwout bearing or the quill tube.
10. If replacing the rear main seal carrier gasket, install it with the rear main seal carrier using a 10mm socket. Lubricate the bolt threads with anti-seize and torque 84 lb-in.
11. If replacing the rear main seal, install the new seal with a coating of motor oil on the interior and exterior surfaces. Ensure it is seated evenly and is flush with the surface of the carrier.
12. If the flywheel is to be resurfaced, be aware that the flywheel requires a rotary cutting pattern that is different from the finish provided by a common brake rotor lathe. This service can be found at many auto parts stores and automotive machine shops.
13. If services are to be performed on the transaxle, execute those operations at this time.
14. Check all components that have been removed to access the clutch for any needed cleaning, service or replacement since this is the best opportunity to access many of them.
