I get 20-21 mpg pretty consistently. I don't drive particularly easy. Ethanol fuel will always cause a drop in mileage. Ethanol burns much cooler than gasoline therefore releases less BTU or thermal energy per gallon. In other words your engine needs more ethanol to produce the same results as gasoline. Ethanol burns cleaner so is better for the environment and is a totally American product. Over 50% of the gasoline we use is imported, from undesirable places. I'll take Ethanol. FWIW high octane gasoline burned in an engine that does not need it is a complete waste of money. No one believes this, but higher octane simply makes fuel more resistant to detonation, and is more difficult to burn. It actually makes your engine less efficient. The only time higher octane fuel is needed is when your engine is spark knocking. Which is related to compression ratio and timing. Your not "treating" your car when you fill up with premium. That is a bunch of BS started by the oil companies to get consumers to pay a premium price.

once there figured out i should be gettin beasty good mileage again

by the way i dont drive like an A$$ but i do drive "spirited"

the trip home from NESHO i raced 2 94-98 stangs one a v6 and one obviously a stock turd 4.6 they were fun races lol

im very happy with the fuel economy of the 3.4 i was expecting way worse

I usually average around 21-25 mpg and It usually cost between $35-$40 to fill up depending on how empty it is. I can't complain at all for a V8.

my 98 with a bad 02 sensor gets around 24mpg on the highway cruising between 75 and 80.

My 95 MTX, which is a lightweight compared to the fat ass gen III get's anywhere between 28-34 mpg on the highway, measured over MANY road trips.

I've run 93 ever since I measured / compared the spark knock on 87 vs 93 using the XC2 on the stock tune. The knock sensors went crazy on 87. 93, nothing.

82 miles - all city

8.6 gallons

Worst tank to date, same gas pump, same place, etc.

I'm going to drive the car very aggressively this tank and see what it does. I tried to be nice on that last tank and it did even worse.

About ready to unload a clip into this car.

You need a used V8 SHO one. They should be cheap. Remanufactured ones are ~$80 or so.

That is starting to sound like something is messed up a bit. What do you have if you drag a finger through the exhaust pipe, and are you getting any smoke during running or startup, and if so, what colour?

No smoke at start up. Car always starts, runs/drives normal. No smoke under heavy acceleration.

Fuel consumption, though, is abnormal.

Compression check was ~140+ for all 8 cylinders.

As far as the engine goes, assuming the plugs and coils are good the only things that would so adversely affect the gas mileage like yours would be the MAF or the O2s.

Now if there was some other sort of abnormal parasitic drag this would account for the money going down the drain. Tranny, alignment, tires.......

Just changed plugs last month.

It's got me stumped... can't wait for the weather to warm up to drive my Diesel Luv.

Could the transmission be so weak that it's causing the engine to work over time to get down the road?
