Hey, yes i know this is kind of a stupid question..but im just trying to learn what you can and cant do to the stock SHO engine. Lets say if i were to buy a turbo for my 89 SHO that is almost completly stock. Can you just put it on with out haveing to rebuild the lower end of the engine? What all is envolved in putting on a turbo? Also which is better for SHO engines, turbos or superchargers. Also would i have to do the same things to put a supercharger on instead of a turbo. Thanks...sorry if this sounds stupid

LOL.

You are gonna take alotta sh*t for this post. Simply put do a search for turbo or s/c there is a TON of information on this subject. Basically unless you have deep pockets, alot of time, and are a good mechanic you could turbo/supercharge your SHO. If not, it's just a pipe dream like many SHO enthusiasts.

If you fall into that catagory(deep pockets, time, etc) you will have to pretty much rebuild the entire engine, do all proper maintanance(60k/120k) rod bearings, motor mounts, sfb, etc. Then after you have all that done, you could possibly look into purchasing or fabbing a blower kit for your SHO. You should also look into upgrading suspension and the stock brakes.

There are alot more informed and helpful people that if you are serious about doing this to your SHO will help you out, I'm sure. Good luck! :thumb:

There are no stupid questions.. although you run the risk of stupid answers. A search is a good idea. You can do anything to a SHO if you have the cash or the fabrication skills.

Normally I would go off. But I am going to be nice and say to a search.

There are NO turbo kits on the market for the SHO you would have to custom fab the whole thing

Yea you could put it on a stock engine. If you want it to last 5k.

well, I asked LOTS of "stupid" questions before I bought my s/c sho. :D
From very knowledgeable and veteran s/c sho owners, I learned:
1. You don't have to have $10K in mods to support a blown sho, and NO, you don't even HAVE to have a Quaife.
2. New rod bearings would be a very good precaution.
3. Unless you are building a RACE car, none of the "mods" are truly necessary. Nice to have though. Keep the boost low (6 psi or so) and don't beat it to death, stay away from burnouts, dumping the clutch, etc... and everything "should" be fine.
It all depends on how you plan to drive it.
As for "turbo", I believe Toolman is the only KNOWN one

Of course, I'm STILL trying to work out the bugs in my sho. Soooooooo, everything I just said is NOT from experience. Rather from other experienced sho owners :D

If you are looking into putting a turbo on your car you will have to fabricate everything. Not only will you need to upgrade a lot of parts like your injectors, fuel pump, MM's, clutch, you will need a tuner like the tweecer. You should put new rod bearings in no matter what kind of forced induction you are going to use, and run colder plugs than stock. If you are serious about starting a project like this be ready to spend a good amount of money, replace numerous trannies, motors and axles, and lastly have a lot of time to work out the bugs. If you do a search you will find a lot of good info on superchargers, some good info on turbo, and a lot of bs :jpshakeh:

i would highly sugest looking on the internet and searching for "superchargers" and "Turbos" so you can get a decent understanding of what they are by themselves first. after you understand them alone, you can then start to look at a SHO specific application.

the answer is yes you can, but you will only be able to run a low amount of boost, but if your serious about doing a turbo pm me and leave your number and I'll tell you what problems you will run into and what to expect. but in the end its going to take some money alot of money.

That may not be too bad if it includes turbo, IC, and piping. New, that stuff would add up quickly. Once you factor in time for routing the plumbing and all that custom fab time it's about even.

In short, it's gonna take brains and a big wallet. I saw a supercharged car on ebay not too long ago for 10,000 buy it now. If you have some experience or at least good common sense as far as fabrication is concerned things will go a lot smoother. I am almost finished making the mounting brackets and piping to the turbo and am kind of surprised at how easy it has been. The supercharger will be a little easier to set up than the turbo will be. All the information you will ever need is out there on the internet, you just have to put in the hours gathering and interpreting it. Even if the questions sound dumb, you won't know unless you ask. If your looking into turbocharging, I would strongly suggest the book Maximum Boost by Corky Bell.

I picked up a Turbonetics 62-1. I was going to use a 60-1 but I got this one for a good price.

I think the bottom line for this type of question, and many people may not realize it, is that if you have to ask how to get started you probably are no where near prepared for such an undertaking. That is why they will typically get negative responses.

This contrasts starkly with someone who say, has been reading posts about it, and researching it for months and is actually well into the project but has a technical question. If you are curious you can read previous posts on the subject and they would be a better starting position if anything.

That was about 3 years ago, and that was for everything needed.

How were they planning on developing the crossover pipe, up and downpipes? Were they going to get a SHO and go from there, or did they require you to bring yours in? $4500 seems mighty inexpensive considering the R&D that needs to go in to building a custom kit. A small shop I could see doing that, but a big company? Did they offer whether or not they were planning on reproducing it for public consumption?

It was a long time ago, the guy quoted that price and at same time was trying to talk me out of it.[traction was his main concern]He was familiar with the SHO.

I was just curious at the time and didn't really get into deep details, this was a year before i came to the forum, so i was even less informed than i am now. :D

I could only imagine that your car would have to be there as no real kit is available for this car.
