$36.00 Mobil1 every 5000 miles. I also do it myself. It's kinda cool. Plus, Then you know for sure it was done. I've seen a video of shops charging people for oil changes that wasn't done.

I still wouldn't do it. Some people enjoy working on their cars. I would rather pay someone else to do it. I paid $40k for the car I could spend an extra $45 every couple of months. If I had a lift then it might be a different story. I have a fear of a car dropping off the stands and being pinned under it for a day. Even I had 10 stands, ramps, and two nascar jacks holding it up I still wouldn't like it.

Bill I'm not trying to be a smart ass or anything but here is the reason i do all of my own work......

the 94 ATX I have is a one owner car all oil changes are documented ( got a box full of paper work ect.ect. )

here is what the motor looked like after 93,000 mile with oil changes done by dealer ,Garages and oil change places, how do you know what there really putting into your motor ????? they can bill you out for what ever, yes that is sludge and it was blocking the oil pump screen

Worth every penny. If I did it myself it would cost me $35. For an extra $45 I dont have to jack up my 4,000lb+ car, stick it on jack stands, drain, change the filter, fill it up, take it off the stands, then find a place to take the old oil. Doing all of this while it's freezing outside. No thanks. Changing the oil would take me at least an hour, and my time is worth more than $50 an hour. Besides that I hate crawling under a car on stands.

I agree with Bill here. Worth every penny, Mobile 1 5-w20 full synthetic, plus tire rotation included in the dealer cost. Besides, since I'm known to the dealer, plus I pick-up/deliver cars on a regular basis for them, I can roam around the shop area, talk with the techs, and the one who does all my work. I can see what's going on with my car and how they work on others. It's just worth the extra coins in my case.

I'm in agreement with these guys too. I still do my changes, but getting the car up and getting tools out and putting them away is a pain, but I do enjoy changing the oil myself. But when you trust the dealer and have a good relationship with them, there sure isn't any reason not to let them do the change.

At the dealer you sit in a waiting room, but in this place I can sit in my car or get out and watch them. I watch them open up brand new bottles of Mobil 1 and a new Mobil 1 filter. I see my old oil being drained and the new oil going in with my own eyes. Those guys change oil all day long which means they are experts at what they do. I would only change mine once every couple of months which means I am no expert. Changing oil isn't that hard, but it's a lot easier for me to overlook something than those guys. Disagree all you want, but my Mobil 1 shop is top notch. They will do a better job than I can and I don't mind spending the money.

I really believe that it is because the sooner your car wears out the sooner Ford will sell you another.

Seriously? Have you ever even heard of a car whose engine was worn out because the oil wasn't changed frequently enough?

I really believe that the "3,000 mile oil change" interval is because oil change places want to sell you unnecessary oil changes. If Ford's deliberately trying to get you to follow maintenance procedures that will result in the premature wear of your engine, then they're part of an industry-wide conspiracy, because I can't think of any street vehicle whose maintenance schedule includes 3,000 mile oil changes. Especially with synthetic oil!

Do a Google search for "3000 mile oil change myth" and see what sites like Edmunds have to say about it.

Well, I've had Ford tech guys tell me that they have been told that Ford really doesn't care about the difficulty in replacing parts, so I am not surprised with the oil change recommendations...Ford also says our Explorer never requires a transmission fluid change...do you really believe having clean fluids doesn't help improve vehicle life?

That doesn't make any sense. The longer it takes a dealership technician to make a warranty repair, the more it costs Ford. What with the longer warranties these days, any manufacturer would want to make eir vehicles as easy to service as possible.

As for the fluids...well, if the company that makes the vehicle says one thing, and the oil change place down the street says another, I'm gonna have to go with the company...

I change mine at 3k too. Why risk it? I don't know how long I plan on keeping the car, but just in case I keep it a while at least I know it was serviced properly.

I go to a private mechanic (been the family mechanic for years)...costs me $60 for a synth-oil/filter change, plus he always looks everything else over.

I was doing 5k-ish changes on the SHO, but with this most recent one he said the oil was looking a bit dirty, we're going top push it back to 3k changes. I do about 95% short-city driving (which is why my MPG average is also only 18mpg)

Not saying it makes any sense, just that if you start working on any of Fords vehicles it doesn't take look to find that easy access to working on these vehicles aren't part of the equation. As far as oil changes go, I think whatever you are comfortable with, is the interval you should do the changes. I just think that oil looks pretty contaminated when I do my changes at 3000 miles and I have found that I haven't had a problem with that interval.
I also do fuel filter changes at 15K even though that's not the recommendation from Ford, and I do know that I was completely surprised at the amount of dirt and other junk was trapped in the filter with my change interval. I really believe that regular fluid changes are good for a vehicle and really do help extend life. I don't think you can beat maintenance, would much rather do maintenance then repair.

If you're basing the "contaminated" oil based on how it looks, you should send a sample in to get tested and find out how much you really have left with that oil.

When I had my Civic, I ran oil between 5-8k miles based on how it was driven. My wife's car is about the same. The only reason I change my STi and SHO at 3k is because of the way I drive them.

I've yet to change the oil on my 1992 Taurus... It leaks enough that I just add new oil. I probably out to think about changing the filter though. It's a $500 [winter] beater that I literally have only had to put gas and oil in for the last year and a half.
