iirc, someone had a dyno graph w/ no filter or box at all where it was only 1 hp better than the stock filter/airbox. based on this, I struggle to understand how any other intake could be worth 5 hp.....

I have dynoed my SHO on 3 separate occasions.

1st time I did back to back dyno runs, one with the stock airbox and a K&N filter, one with the airbox popped open and me holding it up in the air. I gained 2 or 3 whp when I opened up the box.

2st time, once again, back to back dyno runs, one with the stock airbox and a 5k mile old paper filter, one with the airbox popped open and me holding it up in the air. I gained 4 or 5 whp when I opened up the box.

3rd time was N20 testing.

There is a small amount of power to be had by opening up the box IMO, although I have had other members say it's not fair to test like this because the fender well has positive pressure at speed that forces more air into the box

thats what spectre has over metal intakes. its insulated plastic with a chrome coating to deflect heat

I bet that chrome coating deflects cosmic rays too :sun:

Honestly, unless you have some sort of real insulation on there, its not going to deflect HEAT like some sort of mirror...

My guess is you were just asking for some advice on a CAI and can do without the sarcastic remarks. I think that you are looking for something with a little more style than what the stock SHO intake system offers, in addition to retaining some semblance of cold air intake, That’s your personal preference. If you want to build your own, search for a company called Air Flow Systems. They can provide everything you need to cobble up a system that fits your needs.

Reasons to install a CAI...

Looks
Performance
Sound

Max Gain is 5-6 hp unless one designs a nice ram air option which could probably push the gain to 6-10 hp.

55mm MAF are restriction to the SHO engine. Not a problem of resolution, just a problem of pressure drop. 80mm MAF Mark 8 style matches the flow of a 65mm Throttle Body.

Modding a Taurus is stupid.

Buy a 5.0L and be done if you like FORD so much. If not, LT1/ LS1 FTW

That is all.

To the OP: Here is what I did on my own. As you can see this question always generates a bunch of friction on this forum. I'm trying to answer your question, and not get into the " I know more than you do" crap.
Hope this helps:
