So the past few days my battery light has been coming on very dimmly at idle, mostly at night. I haven't had a chance to put a volt meter on the battery but everything seems to work fine, radio with amp (turned up very loud at times), lights don't dim at all and usually my radar detctor will shut down if the volts drop below 12volts and that hasn't happened yet. Could there be a fault in the alternator that would cause the light to come on or is it possible that the light would come on if the alternator was over charging. I know I need to put a volt meter on the battery and I'm am gonna do that tomorrow but I highly doubt the voltage is going to be low.

Everything is new also, battery, alternator and new cables. I did all this during the summer.

If it's dim, I wouldn't worry about it. Odds are that the alternator is overcharging the battery by less than half a volt (it will light up bright enough to see in daylight at around .5v). This just means you have a good, strong alternator.

If you are concerned, I would take it to autozone/AAP for a charging system test. Odds are, it will not find anything wrong, though.

I would take it Nd have it checked autozone will do it. I had the same symptoms recently before alt and various things craped out. It mite be just like hawkeye said but its better to be safe then sorry .

Useless

Its been discussed so many times, its not even funny. It seams these alternator ''tests'' dont pick up the faults on our alternators , they will tell you its fine when its not.

Usually when the light comes up and your wires are fine , it means your alt is on its way. Period.

If its above 14.5 volts while running I would change the alt. The electronics can handle small voltage spikes, but the keyless entry module for example- will fry pretty fast.

It has a component (MOV- also found in power bars) that suppresses excess voltage, but it can only handle so many thousand spikes before it shorts out and you end up popping fuses.

So I finally checked the voltage and it's charging a little low, around 12 volts at idle with everything on (lights, amp, heat, wipers and radar detector). I rev it to about 2k and I get 13.8 volts. I had other problems with the charging system during the summer I will put the link up here, I doubt it's the alternator but I will swap it in the next few days. Where is the fusible link on the Gen 2 ATXs.

Ditto on replacing the alt. Mine did the exact same thing, dim batt light intermittantly. It will just get worse.

I recently had an alternator go out, replaced it but didn't replace the battery.

Make sure you carefully check the battery cause a bad bettery can **** an alternator and vice versa, me thinks.?!

I haven't been on much but here is the deal with the car. Earlier this year I had a serious charging problem tried 2 or 3 alts. same results. I then bought a brand new interstate battery, replaced the battery cables and terminals and again replaced the alt. Same problem, Im also replaced the alt. plug just for the heck of it. At the time it was the only car I had on the road so as a last resort I went with a smaller alt. pulley which brought my idle volts to just under 13v with all accessories on which kept my accesories happy and me. I knew it was just bandaid to the real problem but it has worked up until now. I can still run all accesories just fine but the battery light comes on dimmly at idle. I checked and it's charging just above 12v, way too low. I am going to try to replace the fusible link I can't think of anything else it could be.
