Welded Differential Trashed...

I have yet to look in the case, as the car will not be used by me any longer... but one of my SHO's reinforced differentials went out with 64k hard miles on it. When I say hard, I mean hard and many burnouts... like everyday! I have reinforced SHONUT mounts in the car and both are TRASHED. I drove it like that for about 10k miles because I was trying to **** the motor, but that didn't happen. I also never changed the transmission fluid in that case. Just a little update on these differentials! :evilgrin:

Hawkeye, it's older than that unless you're talking about Dale's(don't know if he's still around, he's a Texas guy as well) verison which I wasn't sure if he welded or not, which would be around the same time. I welded mine no telling how many years ago when it was being debated of being bad for the transmission. It's L-shaped brackets welded directly on the pinion shafts to the rivets, and roll pins replaced with stainless steel pins. Brian from the PASHOSHOP uses the same technique last I knew, and offers the service. :thumb:

I'd be curious to see how long they'd last in a SHO in great condition that has its transmission fluid replaced on schedule.

yup, did the one in my 94 a few weeks ago there:)

mine has about 2000-3000 KM's on it so far and no nasty noises or ejection yet! i do have to say i heart third gear wheel spin :)

Mine has 34 K hard miles of daily driving with a F/I SHO and is holding up fine.

It was welded at the PA SHO SHOP.

Highly recomend him.

i dont think you guys understand what pin welding does..
think of it as borrowed time. a welded pin does not mean you get to do burnouts.
too many factors play into if and when the pin is still gonna walk out.
why risk blowing up a transmission that you cannot get new parts for?

i got my diff welded as a safty caution but i still dont go out doing burnouts with it.
i personally recommend getting it done just dont expect it to be the solution.

Same here , I just dont want it to get out when im on the freeway like some people here.

Anyway burnouts on a FWD is as *** as this guy.

That's if you don't take your FWD to a drag strip, where it would be ideal to heat up the tires to gain better traction on your launch. :)


Edit: And before it might be added in here that heating up the tires to gain traction is useless, which comes from those going to the track with bigger than stock rims: Going to the drag strip with low profile tires is about as *** as the guy posted above.

Could you post pic's when you get a chance.
I am curious as to what exactly failed. My guess is that the clearance between the pinion shafts and pinioon gears was too great, and the entire aluminum diff cracked. Am I right???
