There is a weird noise, a constant 'whirring' type of noise that sounds a little electronic as I drive my car.. it does not make the noise sitting still, with or without giving it gas. It sounds kind of like a speedo cable to me, and the faster I go the more apparant it is.. does this sound like a correct diagnosis? Speedo cables are easy to change and cheap if that is in fact what it is.

Hey Michael,

It is possable to be your spedo cable. on my 91 it made the same noise sometimes. it did that untill just a few days ago when the dang cable broke!!!! if you look in your engine compartment by the fire wall on the drivers side by the tranny there will be a spedo cable. not sure on atx but on the manual its a 3 part cable one that goes in the tranny one in the middle and one that goes into the dash. my middle one broke. So thats something to inspect. check to see if there is enough grease in there.

The speedo cable noise that you can hear in the passenger compartment is usually from the upper cable section. The clip at the transmission end is a snap to get off, but the one on the rear of the speedomemter itself is tough to access with a human hand. If you know how to press the plastic clip on the end, you can remove it from the speedometer without removing the instrument cluster.

Did you know that there is a maintenance entry for lubricating the speedometer cable?

I don't know if we have the same noise, but mine does that too. It is like a clicking sound, almost like the ol' baseball card in the bicycle spokes when we were kids sound. :p

Over time, I've grown to ignore it, but as long as we're talking about speedo noises I thought I'd ask.

Any Ideas?
