I replaced my water pump, cps and timming belt about 6 months ago. Now I have a water leak that looks to be coming from the water pump again. If I replace just the water pump this time do I still need to remove the crank pully or timing belt? I can not remember if I would be able to skip these steps. I do not want to replace anything but the water pump and my time is very limited.

You`ll need to remove the timing belt, but not the crank pulley.

The reason you'll need to remove the timing belt is because there is very little chance that you will be able to replace the pump without getting coolant on the belt. This is one of the substances you are NOT allowed to get on the belt. One of the others is oil.

Did you replace the whole pump or was it a rebuilt front case half? What brand did you use? This is for the record so that we can keep our eyes out for this early failure again.

I replaced the whole pump with a NEW Motorcraft. I can't believe that it is leaking so soon. I will pull my file on it and get back with you with the mileage I have on it. I am wondering if the "O" ring is leaking and not the pump. I am going to call the parts house I got it from and see what kind on warantee came with it. As far as removing the timing belt, is the only reason for removing it to keep the coolant from getting on it? Will I have enough room to remove and install the pump without removing the belt?

Yes the reason is to prevent coolant from contacting the belt. The pump can be removed with the belt installed. I have done that before and vowed never to do it again. If there is no warranty coverage on the Motorcraft pump, I would recommend that you try a rebuilt pump. A rebuilt pump is the front case half including new seals and bearings. The case is refinished and the impeller and shaft looked new also. You leave the back case half still connected to the inlet and outlet tubes and just remove the case bolting and gasket. The rebuilts come with a new case gasket, a lifetime warranty and a price under $70.

Scott,
I replaced my water pump on 2/19/01 and I have 7,208 miles on it.

Motorcraft should give you a replacement and a big apology for that pump. There was obviously a defect in the components if it is leaking through the shaft seals with that few miles on it. You will have to rule out the O-ring leak you mentioned earlier. I would definitely approach your supplier about making good on their product.

Well I just went out and pulled the left front tire and wheel well cover off to inspect my coolant leak. At first I thought it was the pump. Now it looks like I have a pin hole leak in the lower hose that is blowing between the crank pully and the water pump. I can not believe that this hose is a dealer item only. Looks like the SHO is down for a few days until I can get a replacment. I just hope this fixes my leaks. .........

For a hose replacement, it is not simple, but it is much easier than a water pump swap.
