In a few days, I plan to perform the 60k front end maintenance. The water pump, thermostat, ECT sensor, and temperature sending unit/sensor will also be replaced.

1. Research indicates that for the thermostat only one gallon of coolant needs to be siphoned out of the radiator. Is this enough for the water pump replacement? I prefer to replace hoses and flush the system at a later date.

2. The new temperature sensors each have a coating on the threads. Is it a locking material or a sealant? Should teflon tape also be used on these threads?

I'll have a lot of other silly novice questions as the project progresses.

Thanks for your patience,
Tom

1. No need to siphon out the radiator...there is a drain plug on the bottom corner...just unscrew it and take off the radiator cap and the fluid from the radiator will drain.

2. I am pretty sure that the material on the threads of the temp sensors is a sealer. To prevent leaking.

Well Mark N. recommends putting teflon tape around the threads of the temp sender unit to prevent leakage, but that is just what his video said... shrug

As long as the sealant that comes on the new sender isn't messed up, I would just go with that. It's not going to leak. And if it does by chance leak far down the line, then it would be easy enough to remove and put new sealer on, or clean the threads and wrap with a layer of teflon tape (or the really lazy way, don't clean the threads and wrap with teflon tape! :p

Is removing one gallon of coolant enough for replacing the water pump, or does the entire system need to be drained?

Probably best to drain the radiator. When you remove the water pump you have to disconnect the lower hose from the water pump anyway. So, you're fairly low in the system already. If you don't drain the radiator, you'll have the lower hose just hanging there full of fluid. You'll probably end up spilling a lot of it out during the water pump removal.

This is the opportune time to change the lower hose since you've got one end of it disconnected already, why not just disconnect the other end and replace it. Then do the upper hose at your leisure.

Also it's probably a good idea to get the Fel-Pro water pump gasket kit, so that you'll have new 'O' rings available in case you damage an 'O' ring during removal.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to order the lower hose. Hopefully the local Ford dealer will be reasonable(not holding my breath). I do have the water pump gasket set though.

Is the upper radiator hose as SHO specific as the lower one is, or will any parts store hose work on top?

Here's part of SDPatts' parts list for the 60k
3) Water Pump - 120K
...(remanufactured-lifetime warranty)
...3.0L A1 Cardone 57-1373, O’Reilly Auto Parts $61.99
...3.0L A1 Cardone 57-1373, RockAuto.com $49.99 (warranty?)
...3.0L NAPA WP 571373, NAPA Auto Parts $41.99
...3.2L A1 Cardone 57-1458, O’Reilly Auto Parts $67.99
4) Water pump gasket set - only if desired, not usually required
...Fel-Pro ES70425, RockAuto.com $4.88
5) Lower radiator hose - only if desired, not usually required
...Motorcraft, FPO $12.87

The upper radiator hose I removed was a Goodyear hose number 61549. Sorry I don't have the Motorcraft part number, but if use FPN, you should be able find one there easily. You should be able to get an aftermarket upper radiator hose. And yes it is SHO specific as it is molded to fit, and has a protector sleeve for where it may rub on some underhood components.
