Is there anything that needs to come off besides the Intake Mani. and the timing cover to remove the Water pump. Are there any short cuts when removing it?

You'll need to remove all the front belts, front and rear timing covers, crank pulley, timing belt, and undo the CKP sensor harness to get the water pump out. And also, you don't need to remove the intake. You can just remove the crossover tube and call it a day. :thumb:

The intake manifold does NOT have to be removed to access the water pump. The timing belt SHOULD be removed to prevent it from being wetted by the slippery ethylene glycol anti-freeze.

It is basically the same hardware removals as for the timing belt service when you replace the water pump. Along with the water pump, you should also consider replacing the O-ring seals between the pump and the outlet paths. The seals come in the water pump gasket set from Fel-Pro, ES70425 from O’Reilly (or equiv) for $5.69.

I have used A1 Cardone remanufactured pumps on all but the first replacement on my car and all of those on the cars I have serviced for others. The reman units have a lifetime warranty and have proven to last, on average, longer than the $210 new pump I purchased from Ford which made it only 50,000 miles before leaking. The A1 Cardone kits come with the front pump half with the shaft, impeller, seals and bearings along with the pump body gasket. It does not include the pulley (neither do the new pumps) which is always reused.

Okay, now what about the timing itself? D I need to mark anything while the belt is off to make sure I don't mess up the timing?

Thanks SHOtimer, very informative... I think I'm gonna be a wussie on this one and have it done somewhere, I don't like messing with timing belts. Thanks to everyone for the info. Looks like I'll be paying in the 700's for the new pump, timing belts, CPS, and serp. belt and labor! My wife is gonna **** me!

Actually, I did mine w/out pulling the crank pulley. Not because I wanted to leave it on, but because I wasn't able to get the stupid bolt loose and I ran out of time. I didn't need to replace the timing belt so I was just really careful not to get it wet. I was also able to replace the CPS w/out pulling the crank pulley. It's kinda a pain but not terrible.

Or you could look for someone in your area who knows how to do WPs. He or she can help you and teach you how to do it, so you can either do your next one or help someone else do theirs.

Yeah, I decided to try it myself, I am good with a wrench but I wasn't motivated enough at the time of my origonal post to try it myself. I am always up to helping someone out if I know how or not... two heads is better than one. I'll keep you posted, I'm taking it slow should be done by sunday. Also decided to do all the gaskets and the crank seals as well as some sensors

I'm going to try this myself. I have a basic Idea of what to do since I've done this on other cars I have owned. I now have a 92 MTX and I love it. I just hate how tight and costly they are. I have to have a new clutch put in and I dont have a clue nor the tools to due it with. So that will cost $1300 to $1500. But I wanted to thank everyone who replied to this post and the person who posted it . I found very helpful tips here.

Chaz, i've done clutch jobs on SHO's before owning 3 currently myself haha. i'm a service tech and know SHO's well. I'd be more than happy to do it for you for far less than the 1300-1500 range that you were quoted. i'm also in MN.

Thanks for the offer. I'm so GREATFUL for this site. What would you charge me? I just finished working for the season, and I have to wait for unemployment to kick in. I'm not in any hurry to have it done, I mean that I have till april to get it done. So if it comes down to you doing it on your time, I have plenty of it to allow. Again thank you and let me know on that price.

I don't remember the part numbers, but O'Reillys has a $6 and $14 gasket kit for the SHO. Get the $14 kit as the $6 one does not have the crossover tube seals and pump housing gaskets.

I just had mine done for $1150. Clutch, PP, TOB and rear main seal. He had to use a sleeve saver and larger TOB, cause the tranny shaft had some damage or something. I don't have a clue what's in there!!!:oogle:

There is so much information available in the forums that you guys should do some reading before spending small fortunes on clutch and water pump jobs.
Both these jobs have been covered in depth several times, including pictures, and the satisfaction you will get from doing it yourself is worth the effort. The great thing about sites like the SHO forum is that if you have problems, there are hundreds of us to help you. Go for it, have some fun.
