Water pump question

Water pump is on the way out the door. It's leaking anti-freeze and you can hear the bearing grinding together.

Anywho, how long do you think I can continue to drive before my water pump locks up on me or something worse happens. I'm keeping anti-freeze in the car and I continually watch the needle and listen to the car as I drive to spot any problems.

Give me your thoughts and try not to yell at me too much, it's my only mode of transportation right now.

Just replaced mine. It had just started to leak but we were in there to change the timing belt anyways. You may wanna look at changin' the timing belt if it hasn't been done recently since you have to open it up anyways to change the water pump out. Might as well change the accessory belt(s) too while you have it off. No real way to tell when that pump might take a crap. :-(

CPS (crankshaft position sensor)

Leaking water pump is a receipe for CPS failure. Definitely replace it when you replace the water pump.

If you can hear the bearings, it's on it's last legs. Have it replaced ASAP.

If you don't know how old the timing belt is I would replace that and the crank sensor as was mentioned already, at the same time. Everything is exposed at this time and you don't want to do essentially the same job twice.

My water pump went for almost 2 months before it locked up and stripped the p/s w/p belt off. It's amazing how heavy these cars are w/no power steering. Then replacing it was a nighmare because the crank bolt required an inpact chissle for removal. Oh well, it did last 160k!!! Have fun?!? By the way good b-date. Mine is 09-26-71. Later.

If you can hear the bearings making noise and your leaking coolant your on borrowed time. I wouldn't venture too far like that.

By the way I was just on ebay and someone is selling a reman water pump for a but it now of $59.00. Not a bad price when you consider the price of a new one. Also, are you replacing the water pump yourself or having it done?

thats where i got my water pump from,it a great deal!!
however i recomend replacing your pump and CPS ASAP!!!
i did mine during a 60k even before it was leaking

Because nobody has stated the obvious let me say it "DO NOT drive the car like this". A leaky waterpump will **** a cps sensor, which inturn will leave u STRANDED. Its not like a leaky hose where you can limp it along till you have time to fix it...this needs to be done asap.

If you don't have a triple A membership this might be a good time to look into getting one.

I have parked my car and haven't driven it since Friday. Now I'm trying to order a waterpump for my car which is becoming a pain in the you know what. I can get the waterpump for $75 but if I order it on Friday, I won't get it until sometime next week. Autozone tells me that I have to order by Wednesday or they won't have the pump until after march 1st. Sadly, I won't have the money to order the part until Friday the earliest.

I've been asking around to see if anyone is willing to walk me through this process of replacing a waterpump and all I get is silence. I called 2 shops already one that specializes in SHO's and one that I have taken all my cars to before and trust that he won't rip me off. One shop wants $300 and the other wants a mininum of $600 (he would not quote me on exact price and tried his hardest to convince me that no one other than his shop would be able to replace my water pump). You be the guess of which one wants a minimum of $600 (are you reading that correctly, the minimum, not the maximum). For all it's worth, this guy could come back to me and say that my waterpump was an $800 job. Otherwise, I'm being rapped for a part that cost no more than $130 but labor that cost anywhere from $180 to a minimum of $580 which is totally rediculus.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not the type of girl that is afraid to get my hands dirty. So if you live in the philadelphia area and want to help me out, let me know. PM me and we'll exchange numbers and set a time to get this thing done. I'm trying to get this done by Saturday of this week. I need my car. It's my only means of transportation.

waterpump without CPS is a 45 minute job and I've done it on the side of I-75 in rush hour. As far as waterpumps go just about any chain store should have the waterpump face half either in stock or next day. I personally like Murray's discount auto for waterpumps. The face is 45.00 and they have them all boxed wrong so you get both halfs. As far as actually removal, Pull the dis connectors take the 2 12mm bolts out of the cross over. remove the 6 8mm bolts from the upper timing belt cover, remove the drive belt. remove the pulley,remove the bolts from the waterpump 8-10. I can usually leave the middle timing cover in if I loosen it up. pull the face off the rear of the pump and make sure you don't pull the rear of the pump out of the transfertube. clean the surface, replace the face of the pump, install everything you removed. As for the '"shop" that wants a min of 600 for the waterpump, better be doing the front 60K with it. crank postion sensor timing belt waterpump and **** I can still do it for less.

Check out the shotimes.com faq. It should have alot of the info you're looking for. Herman's and SHOPP both have good stuff as well. I would suggest you try to find a used Helm's manual for your car at some point that has most of the repair info you will need to keep this thing on the road. I know Russ McCoy used to have a bunch for sale. I don't know if he still has them or not. Also, ask around if someone here has a repair manual on CD. You might be able to get one for cheap.

don't worry read the articles and make sure you have the tools first. its not that hard a job just sounds bad. I would give your self about 10 hours just in case you find your self confused or rusty (you are in lovely pa land of *** holes and rust). It took me about 8 hours over two days and that included 2 trips to the auto shop to find the right bearing puller. I would also buy or borrow a impact socket and breaker bar to get the crank bolt off.(i used this with the starter to break it free) I think it is 19mm but double check first. it might even be easier for a girl with smaller hands. read the sights and print out the directions for your self if you can.

Thanks for the instructions on pulley boosting... but how the **** did you guys get to the ps pulley??? Even with the removal/install kit. There is NOOOOO room down there!
