water pump on 60.120k service?

P'rolly not unless specifically requested or if it was found to be leaking or whining. You can try looking in at the top of the pump housing with a flashlight to get an idea -- if the pump has oxidation all over it, it's probably at least a year or two old (or more), if it looks clean and smooth, it may be less than 12-18 months old.

If you elect to have them replace it, be prepared for over $210 for the pump and more for the labor. considering you can get a remanufactured unit for around $65 with a lifetime warranty at local auto supplies, that's sounds a bit steep.

They will replace anything you are willing to pay them to replace. If your water pump is original at 120K it should be replaced if there are any signs of a leaking seal or a worn bearing.

A Ford OEM water pump is about $200. I would make a list of what you want done, plus what may be necessary to be done, and have them give you an estimate of what it would cost.

For example, you want a new timing belt installed. If they find the crankshaft seal leaking it should also be replaced. If the water pump is also leaking it should be replaced. If the idler pulleys are dry, and the auxillary belts are worn, they should be replaced.

And you have not even gotten into the valve lash adjustments yet. Ford OEM gaskets are very expensive.

I would ask them if they would use an aftermarket waterpump, gaskets, belts, etc. Because it is a 10 year old car they may agree. They may also agree because the OEM parts have been discontinued in many instances.

Research the parts, part or kit numbers, and prices using the research feature so you have some idea about what the parts will cost, what parts may or should be replaced, and where to get them.

You may want to divide the job up into several parts. For example have the timing belt, crank seal, Crank Position Sensor, and water pump done as one job.

Then several months later, when you have a few dollars saved up, get the valve lash adjusted, replace the plug well seals, valve cover seals, intake gaskets, etc. In other words spread the costs out over several months. Hope this helps, rangerj

i should have explained better, it turns out, the origional owner of my car kept all records, exept the 120k service. It says it was done at 140k miles, but it didnt not say the price of it, nor what they replaced on it.

If the work was done by a Ford, or Lincoln/Mercury dealership a record of the service should be in their computer system. Stop at a dealership and ask if they will look it up for you. All they need is the cars Vin.

They keep the records for several years, so if it was done within say 3 years it should be there. rangerj

Look at me, I had my water pump replaced in October... just because it was accessible during my "150K" :rolleyes:
Not 4k miles later, my car is on jackstands for 4 weeks and counting, because I sprung a huge coolant leak (either from the water pump, or from an O Ring behind it) Why, because this is my first time ever taking out a water pump and the connections to it (by myself). Oh yeah, and the stupid woodruff got bent somehow :mad:

Agreed. As long as your water pump is working fine and there are no indications of leaks then why change it?

im changing my CPS, i dunno, i just thought while i was down there...

Yeah but why shell out the extra $$$ when you don't have to? There's an old saying that goes "if it's ain't broke, don't fix it!" I'd verify first that the water pump is leaking...if it isn't save the extra $$$ for some fun mods :D

Good point but it is a bit of a gamble to take.
What if the pump conks out 3 months later? Everything has to be taken apart again $$$$$.

I guess then he could expand a bit more and redo all the seals down there. Soon enough he'd be doing an overhaul on the bottom wink

A few years back as I was approaching time for the 60K service, I called the local Dealers to see what it would cost. They quoted me a price of over $300, but on further questioning, I found out it all it amounted to was fluids and plugs. No valve adjustment or timing belt. These pinheads even insisted my car had a timing chain, not a belt. Naturally, I decided to do it myself. My opinion of dealer service departments is pretty low. The last time I let a dealer service my car the band on one of the CV boots they replaced came off and spewed grease everywhere. Then when they fixed that, they didn't tighten the axle nut all the way. Don't count on the dealer doing much on the standard service intervals.
