I just changed the oil in my SHO last weekend and i've been using the Motorcraft 400S because walmart said it was the size to use. But i've noticed last weekend that the one i had just purchased was slightly shorter in height than the one on my car. Does this affect anything? I may have to try out the FL-1A next time but i do have an ATX....:-/

All oil filters are coming out with slightly smaller containers. The internal filter media is the same size. This is to cut down on the amount of oil being put into land fills.

I have ran into the problem of the FL1A not fitting on a 3.2 MTX swap. The filter would rub the top of the starter when trying to install it.

On my Green 91+ with header's, I must run the FL400S.

I learned earlier today that these FL-1A guys MUST ALL be guys with the GEN II STARTER SETUP!!!

I couldn't for the life of me install the fatter oil filter with my 40 billion pound starter in place; why couldn't I find any post warning me!?

ATTENTION ALL GEN 1 OWNERS:
If you don't have the GEN 2 starter, don't even bother with the FL-1A. The FL-400S is your friend.
:hail:

Actually, how much oil will I lose if I take off my filter without draining my oil?
Just the stuff possibly in the filter? (I haven't run the car yet.)

Same here. When I got my current '90 from George Fourchy a few years ago, it had some funky brand I'd never heard of's version of the FL-1A on it. Everything else totally stock.

I'll have to check, because I'm nearly positive I have an FL-1A in my 90.

It just depends on the starter position and the filter diameter.
I have also slightly "massaged" the top of the starter for clearance.

i was using the FL 1A but the past 2 changes ive been using the FL400S from the parts store. and whatever oil the shop has, i dont usually pay for the oil as long as i show up with the filter n do it myself. seems fair to me.
