I use that filter as well, and it's a decent price but still doesn't flow the oil the sho needs it to up high. I think only thr K&N and mobile one was it, do that. My 94 gets that filter, the 93 gets the 15 dollar K&N.

All filters have bypass valves, so for the most part they're all going to flow about the same once in they're in bypass.

I buy the recommended FL-400S because it is the best built of the Motorcraft filters I have looked at; note the silicone drainback valve. The FL-1A provides no significant advantage in my opinion.

Larger media, i.e., more filter surface area, means less pressure drop across the filter and therefore more pressure at the filter output.

I make a cut on the green line (on both sides, of course), and use the part with the cap as a funnel.

Ive been shoving cardboard over it and then using the "cut the shot out of your hands while you try and pull the filter around the header" method. Last time I just said f*ck it and dropped it. Cardboard worked fine though. I might try the 2L idea. Ran the 400S this time so it shouldnt be as bloody as the 1A

I read a lot of flak about Fram filters....but they have 3 different grades at my local WalMart. Anybody ever taken apart one of their TG3600s after an oil change? How did it compare to the regular cheapie?

To the guy in Belleville that went looking for Motorcraft at walmart.....As far as i know, Wal-mart canada doesnt stock motorcraft parts. The ones in the states are plentiful. On my trip last weekend to buffalo, they even had motorcraft synthetic 5w-30 oil. Not only that but it was cheaper then the dealership cost, by a lot.

I bought the FL-1AHP motorcraft performance filter. When it comes to lubes/filters i prefer not to go cheap. I'll try out the FL-1AHP to see how it feels. The FL-1A is a great filter to begin with. I think the only advantage of the FL-1AHP over the FL-1A is a stronger case (mustang owners make more use of that then anyone. In our SHO's it wont matter as we wont be producing enough force to burst the filter casing lol) and better flow rate. The filter media MAY be better at filtering due to increased surface area but i do not know for certain. Maybe after i swap out the FL-1AHP i will chop it in half and see what the inside looks like.

I was told to stay as far away from Fram products as possible. Warranty claims to do with the engine are being denied if they have fram filters on them as a high rate of fram filters have come apart on ford engines. I believe a TSB was sent out about fram filters and warranty issues awhile ago.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but oil/oil filter is a hot topic in my view. One with a lot of opinions (thats why im not too found of bobistheoilguy.com as its a lot of opinions and brand affiliation. hard to sort out fact from people trying to hype whatever product they use) and some fact mixed in.

I shop Walmart for the Motorcraft FL400S filters and Castrol GTX 10W-30 (SHO) and 5W-20 (Mazda CX-9) 5qt jugs at good prices and great results. As in 405,000 miles on the original engine with the Motorcraft/Castrol combo. Argue all you want about what you think is best. I have proven that pair works quite well.

true. no way wil the fl-1a size fit on my 94 atx

if you have an automatic transmission, some people have problems getting the larger FL1A filter to fit..... there isn't enough room for it to clear the radiator area I believe is the problem..... the automatic setup puts the engine more towards the radiator

I have used a washer fluid jug cut similar to what was posted, and I have also just took a shap punch and popped a hole in the bottom of the filter and let it drain directly into the catch pan for a few mins.

I have personally seen the FL-1A on a ATX car can't see why any other ATX car would be diff unless they used a different fan or a double core rad.

False. Both of my ATXs have been running M1-301 filters (equivalent to FL-1A) for a combined 40,000 miles now. ...they got changed. It wasn't 40,000 miles straight.

But the point remains, they do fit. On some. I haven't seen one that they didn't fit on, but I suppose anything is possible.

Caveat: some finagling is required.

Well i remember reading up on oil/filters for SHO's and i think someones write up (with pics) included them using an FL-1A. Maybe it was on the phoenix project website? So that led me to believe that they fit without issue

I'm hoping i can use some finesse and put the FL-1AHP on. If not, i can always give it to my cousin as he uses those filters on his 5.0L

If it does not fit, there's something wrong with your car...Like a light front end collision that pushed back your radiator support or really messed up motor mounts.

crap. it was in a fender bender back in 1998. From what i found out, it was cosmetic stuff only. had a bumper repalced, new headlight and the fender/hood was repainted. Had the used car manager take a look at the car and he said the rad support and everything else looked perfectly fine, no sign of damage or alteration.

I use a K&N oil filter, and AMSOil 5w30 or 10w40 whatever my mood/season, etc..

Engine is alot cleaner looking than when I got it, and not sure of oil change history when I got it, but I replace the FACTORY rod bearings at 208K.. :p

so there.

My plan is using the FL-1AHP with 5W-30 Amsoil synthetic (not the extended life stuff). My cousin says i could run 0W-30 oil since i'm only doing summer driving but im planning on sticking to factory oil weight spec.

Just because the can is larger does not mean it has more filter media inside. Has anyone got a pic of the 400S and FL-1A side by side opened up?

I've got this pic form Lehman's collection. It doesn't look like the 400S has any bigger media.

Anyone have any pics of an FL-1A cut up? I know it offers better flow for sure but filtering area i think its better but im not sure. Havent been able to find much online. When i swap out my oil/filter (currently it has an FL-400S with bulk oil from our Fastlane [Quicklane in the states]) I'll open up the FL400S. Then when i swap out the FL-1AHP in the fall before storage, i'll chop hat one up as well. Maybe try to figure out the differences between them.

The FL-400S is a great filter...one of very few reasonably priced filters equipped with a silicone drain-back valve. I buy lots of them because I started using them on my V6 and 4.7 V8 Toyota's in addition to the SHO.
