there was a thread a while back about this engine, i believe the block was based off the old 3.0L with two more cylinders added and the stroke mighta been a little longer, someone had a picture of the block of the volvo and the block of the 3.0 sho motor

No such thread that can suggest that the 3.0 was a starting point can be found, there were numerous references to the 3.4, a Volvo exec supposedly claimed that only the connecting rods are common, but I don't blame Volvo for not wanting the bad press around the 3.4 so even that admission is something.

There were numerous threads I reviewed but I fond but this picture to be the most enlightening:

It IMO adds more fuel to the fire. the 4.4 has more bore and stroke than the 3.4. But the cylinders on opposite banks are offset (a'la SHO v6 - not inline like the V8) which may add a touch of overall length.

But in that picture look at the cylinder spacing... I don't know if there could be much aluminum at all between the cylinder liners.

If I had money and time I could make it fit, why I would even bother trying to retain the AX4N is beyond me. I do doubt that the XC90's ATX would fit with either V8 - and the bellhousing pattern looks to be different. Not trying to sound like a broken record or anything but this is just like putting the Intec 4.6 in there, no one woudl admit the obvious 5 years ago - that it is possible. But bench racing is cheap and that is why I worked to get the MTX in my 96 (when I had money and a tiny bit of free time).

This would likely be more involved mechanically than fitting the Intec, but it could be done.

Now our 2006 AWD Freestlye has 70K on it now.... I haven't even considered ever modding it but in a few more years when my wife is done with it - XC90 running gear in there would be sleeperesque... But the V8's are scarce even in non-wrecked form.

The 3.4Ls cylinders are offset a bit. Defiantly not inline.

The only way you would get even cylinder spaceing is if you went with a Fork&Beam rod assembly. As far as I know no automitive V engine has ever have run that setup (in production engines). Now when you start talking V aero engines they all used it the Rolls Royce Merlin, Griffion and the Allison V1710 (just to name a few)

True - What I was referring to was the con rods being evenly spaced along the crank. "Inline" is where two connecting rod journals are essentially side by side (but still offset) between counterweights.

Intriguing thing that has me wondering (And wanting better pics of the 4.4 is that the cylinder "offset" appears to be opposite. Right bank cylinders are more rearward on the block. Whereas the 3.4 is the opposite.

So I went over to swedespeed.com, did a little more poking around, and found this - Apparently, exploding V8 Yamaha's are not confined to SHO's

Can't stop laughing! Drill a drain hole for the water. LOL

The hole they ought to be drilling is for a tiny oil journal to the new "One side sealed" bearing they should be retrofitting with.
