I was talking with my cousin yesterday and he mentioned that the Volvo XC90(?) has a V8 based off the SHO V8. I never knew this. So he has it in his head that someday we'd put the Volvo V8 into the SHO.

First, is this even remotely possible? 'Cause that'd be so ridiculous!
Second, if you can in fact transplant engines, why has no one done it?
Also, does anyone know how much power it does put out? My cousin said it was over 300bhp. So, if you could make it work….:omgsho:

:thankyou:

Because it takes a lot of money and or talent to transplant an engine. They are a 4.4 liter with about 330 HP; don't know how much torque.

about 330 ft-lb as well. I think for the same price of swapping one of those motors into a SHO, you could just buy a used S80 V8 and have a much more attractive car IMO (dont get me wrong, I still like the SHO!) that runs low 14's :/

With enough money you can do most anything, so I cannot see why it would not be possible to transplant the Volvo 4.4 into the Gen III, or a Gen I/II, for that matter. Money, in sufficient quantities, cures all problems. But from what I have read the Volvo 4.4 and our 3.4 are not related otherwise past makers, that is, it is not based on our 3.4.

they're as much related as the 3.4 and the 5,0 out of the Lexus IS-F...inasmuch, yamaha made the engines...aside from that, completely different.

The problem with the Volvo V8, into today's market, is that it isn't clean enough, doesn't have good mpg #s and it doesn't make more hp than the (more marketable) "EcoBoost" V-6 model. Check the following:

Volvo V8- 4.4L 311 hp V8 EPA: 15city/22hwy(2009 S80 V8 AWD)
Horsepower 311 @ 5950 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 325 @ 3950 RPM

SHO EcoBoost V6 3.5L TC V6 EPA: 17city/25hwy(2010 SHO AWD)
Horsepower 365 @ 5500 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 350 @ 3500 RPM

The V8(in similar sized vehicles) offers less HP/Tq #s at higher rpms along with lower mpg. Where does the sales point come from? Even if you re-work the V8 to improve the power #s, it will most likely reduce the mileage aspects. I can't see the value of making a change, just to say "Yamaha" with SHO! The SHO name, to me, has always reflected unexpected performance in an unexpected vehicle. The 2010 SHO continues that tradition. Now they just need to make the engine look as good as it performs. Opening the hood has always been one of the great joys of SHO ownership!:salute:

actually, I believe that the Volvo 4.4 is one of the cleanest V8's on the market today. Although it doesn't get good gas mileage, the emissions are amongst he cleanest V8s. BTW, the V8 in those S80s sounds AWESOME and they do KICK! just not as much kick as the new SHO.

Volvo actually designed the motor (or so its said), but Yamaha were the actual ones that built it. Where as with the ISf and original SHO, Yamaha did the design as well. Many claim there is no relation, but there really is. 3.4 SHO was based off of the v6 duratec, and I believe the 4.4 was as well, but the bore is wider. Stroke is the same.

In transplanting to a Gen3, the real problem is finding a tranny that won't blow, and a 4.4 (only built since 2007) that you won't have to take out a loan to get.

I work for a volvo dealer and the v8 xc90 and s80 are really quick but the s80 t6 will smoke the v8. Yamaha made the v8 for volvo and boy is it a pain in the azz to work on.

You all miss the point I was trying to make. You can't come up with an effective business model for the Yamaha V8 vs the EcoBoost V6. Can Ford do more to enhance the SHO package? Of course they can! The point I'm trying to make is that the yamaha V8 isn't the answer. As "shotime1994" stated, the s80 t6(6cyl turbo) will smoke the v8. :salute:

I was under the impression a T6 runs like mid-high 14's and the V8 runs low 14s. They're both kinda pigs as far as weight (but hey what car isnt these days?) but the V8 isnt much heavier than the T6 and puts out quite a bit more power.

yeah but I think the original poster is thinking that it'd be much easier to put a volvo v8 (assuming it is based on the SHO V8) into a 3G than other engines (such as the ecoboost). I dont think anyone is argueing that the V8 should be in the 4th gen SHO, their were a lot of arguements over that before. Power be damned on the issue, just look at the price of the Volvo V8 vs Ecoboost!

FWIW, the old T6 was nearly as powerful as the new T6 and ran 15 flat, i dont know that adding several hundred pounds of weight, AWD, and a better/newer transmission is going to improve that time significantly.

That is exactly what I was getting at. If the Volvo V8 could be transplanted with relative ease into a Gen III.

While I would love to have the EcoBoost I highly doubt it would come to fruition.

350 ft-lb @ 1500 rpm in a front wheel drive car would be.......yeah, kinda funny

if by "incredibly epic" you mean "unholy amounts of tire smoke", you'd be on to something.

If you look at it though the Gen 5/6 taurus would work for the swap and should bolt right up. The XC-90's platform and the Taurus platforms are the same just the diffrence between the two seem to be acording to wikipedia is the rear control arms are alum and fords are steal. So with that said if you have the money to trash an XC-90 and a relitivly new taurus........................................................

NEGATIVE...

The XC90 V8 is a 60 degree V8 with a balance shaft in the same place as the 3.4.

Trust me they are at least as related as the 2.5 V6 is to the 3.4. the 4.4 has the same number of cylinders as the 3.4 obviously, but will be using different pistons and stroke. I think the 4.4 could fit underhood of a G3. Getting a Tranny to stand up to the punishment would be the challenge.

If funding wouldn't a problem I'd prove that this could be done too. Much like the MTX in my Gen 3. Yes it can be done, and I bet it is easier than you think, just like my MTX swap all the doom and gloom blah blah blah *yack*..
