I was doing a search for VIN number identification and found that nifty little search engine. However, it fails to show the 9'th position identification charecter. These tend to be the number 7,8 or 9. Example:

IFA C P54 Y "7" PA 345043

Does anyone know what that 9'th position charector is for. I've looked at a bunch of these on a list and I can't figure it out! I don't think it is the interior package either.

Also, the 4'th position charecter identifies the restraint system. Is it my understanding that some of these SHO's didn't come with Airbags when they used the letter "C" or would that be for the passenger side airbag only?

Thanks,
TROG

From what Ive read the 9th postition is just a check digit and doesnt really serve any purpose other than make the VIN one digit longer. My 90 had and X, my 93 has a 0, my 95 has a Y and my 97 has an X again.

As far as I know for the Restraint Letter, a C would most likely be for no passenger airbag because I dont think they offered them until 92. My 90 SHO had a C and no pass airbag.

Thanks guy,...

You know, with all the trouble they had with those ATX transmissions, you think they would have used that digit to tell you which tweak in the gear box you got, eh? (snicker)

That sounds about right, except you'd think that they would continue to use the same letter over and over again, say X as that's pretty universal as a dead spot charector, you know what I mean?

Yeah I cant figure out what would prompt them to change a letter that stands for nothing. Dont really see the point. I do like the idea of the ATX warning digit lol.
Glad I could shed some light on the subject
