Video: Last Auto-X of the season.

The Run Down:

Run 1: This of course was my Throw-Away run. The car was extremely loose but felt great otherwise. I knew that I just needed to warm the tires up and it would be back to having a decent amount of Grip.

Run 2: Again, My second throw away run. I tried taking the first long corner right after the start in first. It FELT faster but of course was not. I picked up to tenths on this run.

Run 3: At that point I went back to running the course in second gear like I always did and just generally started Pushing a lot harder, Picking up a lot of time in the courses slalom. Dropped nearly a second on that run.

Run 4: Same as run 3, Just pushed a little harder and ran a little smoother. Picked up another 4 tenths.

It was a good day, Car ran great and I'm glad I got another event in before I leave. Can't wait for next year! Here's the video, Runs 1-4 in order.

I've kind of tried to stay away from there. There's just so many knuckleheads running around on that road doing stupid shit that anything can (in a bad way) happen.

And to be quite honest, I'd be to scared to push my car on a road I don't know.

Terry's Gen III did INCREDIBLY well. A lot better then you would expect a Gen III to fair against a Gutted, Coilovered Gen II.

No. That's just what a gutted car sounds like on a Asphalt parking lot. You can hear every little pebble that's kicked up by the Tires.

Do you have time to heat up the tires before a run? All that discussion about tires got me thinkin about 20 min track sessions compared to 1:30 min Auto X runs, heat cycles and such.
It's like talking about wear and tear on a car, compairing 20 min track session to Auto X, doing that for 20 mins straight would make me tired.

A 1:30 Second Auto-X course is LONG!

But no, You don't get a chance to heat up the tires before hand. That's why I generally am not to serious at the first few runs. There for Just finding your way around the Course and of Course putting heat in the tires. Generally by your last few runs, The tires are warm. That's when it's Game time.

I have however overheated a set of Yokohama's on a 90 Second Auto-X Course. The Forces your putting on the tire are crazy , (Compared to lets say Road racing, Where for the most part everything is Gradual and more smooth, It's only exemplified If you are a sloppy, unsmooth driver like I was at the time). The car was plenty fast on the first part of the run (It was one of my last runs, The tires by this time were pretty damned hot) but by the end of the course it was almost undrivable. The tires were already pretty well Worn, So it was a good excuse to upgrade anyways!

I did not need to touch them or put a gauge up to them as they had turned Blue and had become as hard as rock.

Auto-x != RR, but 150F tire temp is in the typical-to-low range for me, after a 1.6 mile cool down lap and a trip across the paddock to the garage. My highest ever was, again, after a cool down lap and parked in the paddock, 249F. That was on a day when the ambient was ~110F and the asphalt temp was muy hot. It isn't however, all that unusual to have paddock tire temps over 200F. I get it a lot less now that I run Hoosiers and have a bit more suspension travel in the front, but I've measured 181F as recently as last month.

FWIW, I get the high temps on the outside edge of the RF tire because of the banking at PIR. I don't see the really high temps at other tracks. Track surface and layout matters a lot for tire temps, as does the suspension setup on the car. This summer at Miller my garage mate and I were noticing that it was difficult to get enough heat in the tires, partly because it's a very smooth, non-abrasive surface on the track. His car is a tennis shoe and doesn't weigh anything, anyway, and the rear tires on a SHO are really hard to heat up for the same reason. Combine that with a smooth surface and you really have to be creative to manage the tires.

Most RR tires need to be ~160F before they start gripping well.

And don't measure tire temps with an IR gun. Use a probe.

Yes, it gets corner-weighted from time to time. Diagonals are always kept very close to 50%.

The last time I set it corner weights were:

L->R
F 1050, 983
R 729, 660

That was with driver, ballast, and about 5/8 tank. That's a bit below competition weight for me, which is one reason why I typically run with a full tank or near full.

Well besides the fact my car needs to be Corner Balanced (Bad!) that's what I pretty much thought.

A Gutted SHO...can Only be gutted from the Dash Back.

My rear end is a lot lighter then yours, But the Left Front is actually heaver then yours!

Mine looked like this (With Driver).

F 1067 - 855
R 503 - 582

Without Driver...

F: 1003- 829
R: 445 - 563

With about the same amount as gas in the tank.
