Well first off, it's a 95 MTX with 213,000 km's on it. Every once in a while, I'll be driving and my shifter will make this buzzing/grinding sound. I can relly feel it if resting my hand on it. It happens most often in neutral when i am coming to a stop. The car always stays still in neutral with the clutch down, or rolls if on an incline, All the gears work fine. 1st is sometimes hard to get into, but not often. I tried to adjust the clutch by pulling it up, but there was no clicking. I am wondering if something is loose or wrong with the linkage since it comes from the shifter/console area. You can hear it outside the car as well, sounds like rattling of a loose heat shield from underneath. Sorry for the long post, just wanna tell all the details. Thanks in advance for any help or advise.

Jeff.

Hey Jeff,

My shifter used to rattle a bit as well, usually just as the clutch was engaged. This is normally due to some slop in one or more connections between the shifter and the tranny. When you have the tranny in gear, can you move the shifter side-to-side very much?

Have a look at this topic for some pointers on where to look for sloppy shifter connections and how to deal with them.

Hope this helps. If you have any questions, shoot me an email. I'm not too far away! thumb

Here are links ( link1 link2 ) to my experience (with pictures) of rebuilding the front coupling on the MTX linkage. The rubber portions of this joint have probably been worn and lost. Here is the coupling that wears and allows side to side play in the linkage.

Another possibility is that the slip joints on the box under the shifter handle are too tight to allow the shifter to move with the transaxle as the mounts flex.
