A KLDE and a Yamaha V-6 are two different engines entirely. This guy doesn't have a clue as to what he's about to get into.

This is the front of a KLDE. Rather simple to get to the timing belt, cam gears, etc. The cams are direct gear driven with hydraulic lifters.

Dscn3430

All the brackets and covers come off of the Yamaha just to get the timing belt. Then you have the rear cover, 3 cam seals, the cams, cam chains, tensioners, and finally you have access to the lifters.

Now go through and just look at what's involved. If this guy thinks can do put that amount of time in it for $250.00 he is by far in store for a rude awakening.

well, he will have to work for $25/hour to accomplish it, if he makes book time. not many mechanics are willing to do that, even for a buddy.

It's the first of many surprises.

I own a Probe GT with the KLDE and it has no problems getting to 8000 RPMs. Smoothest engine I've ever driven.

The solid lifter engines are better able to control valve timing in the higher revs whereas hydraulic lifter suffer from valve float. That's a condition where the lifter loses contact with the cam lobes. It's rare for manufacturers to put solid lifters in engines simply because the mechanics can't work on them properly and as a cost issue for their cusotmers. There are plenty of horror stories of Ford dealerships not knowing the ins and outs of the Yamaha engines nor being able to service them properly.
