im building a set of heads from scratch. The problem im having is that my valve even with the smallest shim i have (2400) has not enough gap. i screwed with it all last night and the biggest gap i could set was .005

also, my cams dont turn very well once i bolted down the caps. i used plenty of assembly **** on the caps and cams.

any tricks? this is my first time on a sho.

Are the heads bolted to the block?
Shouldn't make a difference. I've been able to turn cams in the heads while they weren't bolted to the block. You didn't mix and match cam caps, did you?

On shimming the valves, there are shims smaller than 2400. I know for a fact that I have at least one 2325 shim in my current heads.

I hope we didn't mix and match caps. How do the caps/numbers work?

I know the arrows go to the front of the engine.

Pull the caps off of the valve stems and look at the back side of the shim tray. There may be a small spacer that fits over the valve stem causing the problem. If they are there, you can remove them with your finger and problem solved.

I think what he's getting at is do you have aftermarket cams? Because if you do, they probably have the lash caps under them and that can cause some weird shim problems sometimes. Ask me how I know, my shims range from 2000 to 3000 series shims with my stage 2's, and I had to use stage 1 and stage 2 lash caps.

Same here , even with my huge amount of shims , I had to go buy some weird sizes @ a yamaha dealer.
