I'm doing the VCG's in my 92 and I pulled the intake mani off, took the valve cover gaskets off and cleaned up where the gasket goes. Did the same thing for the front and rear, but when I put the whole thing together it was dumping oil out of the rear VC. The front does not leak at all. I've had the thing apart 3 times today, cleaned it up, make sure the gasket was in right, even tryed RTV'ing the corners a bit. Any idea what the issue could be? This is 10x as hard as it should be.

did you remember the squirt of RTV at the corners of the ditches (the round half-moon indentations)?

Is that absolutely required? I did it the second time and it literally leaked a half quart out onto the ground. I took it apart for the 3rd time and removed the RTV, put it back together after cleaning anything, and it doesn't SEEM to be leaking anymore. Though it is still smoking like a **** from all the oil that went alll over the block, firewall, exhaust, etc.

Bump for an answer and an update: It doesn't SEEM to be leaking from the VCG anymore, but now there is oil coming out of the exhaust big time, and when I downshift and let it coast for a bit, then give it gas, HUGE clouds of oil smoke come out.

After i rolled my gasket for my rear valve cover..i bought a small mirror that i used to look at the back of the VC before i put everything back together... That way, i could see the entire length of the gasket, and see that it was indeed visable between the head and valve cover.

Even after i got the cover on right, and the leaking stopped, it still smoked like mad for at least 50 miles..the oil looks to collect right on top of one of the cats, soaking it....and you just have to wait till it burns off. I also had an insane amount of smoke coming out of my exhaust after my tuneup, smelled like rotten eggs (raw fuel in the cats)...i attributed that to all the intake cleaner in my intake that needed to burn out...as well as some water moisture that collected in the exhaust..since the car did sit for several days. Either way, it's cleared up.

Hope everything clears up...the best i can say is give it time...if you're positive the rear VC isnt leaking anymore..it's probably just old oil that needs to burn off
